Since the JRPG “Light and Shadow: Expedition 33” created by the Sandfall team was officially launched in April last year, it has successfully received overwhelming praise from the media and players. It eventually became the best-performing game in 2025 and even swept more than 500 Game of the Year awards from media around the world, completely surpassing the record originally set by “Elden’s Ring”. However, the performance of this game completely exceeded the development team’s initial expectations.

In a recent interview with the IGN website, the Taiwanese screenwriter Yan Yongru of “Light and Shadow: Expedition 33” shared more behind-the-scenes secrets related to the game. He said that the developers of the Sandfall team did not actually have high expectations for the media evaluation that the game would receive on the Metacritic website. They even started a very interesting bet about it. When the media score finally gave a super high evaluation of 92 points, most of the members lost the bet.

According to Yan Yongru, the original bet was that if the media rating of “Light and Shadow: Expedition 33” exceeded a certain level, some developers would be willing to do some random and crazy behaviors. She said that many of them have already fulfilled their promises. For example, one of the developers ate a whole roast chicken within a certain time while listening to other employees performing Beatboxing.

There was also an employee who dyed his hair pink as part of a bet, and another who promised to perform stand-up comedy, which he eventually did. In addition, several employees got tattoos to mark this moment forever. But considering what Light and Shadow: Expedition 33 ultimately achieved, the folks at Sandfall are more than happy with it all.
