Google Photos will offer an AI feature that brings photos to life — here’s a preview of the effect.
Google Photos’ new feature that makes photos move is called “Remix.” It was spotted by foreign media outlet Android Authority from an APK file back in May this year, but at the time only interface screenshots were available—there were no demo videos, so it was unclear how well the effect would actually work.
Earlier, Android Authority once again took apart the APK file of the latest version of Google Photos (v 7.3.6) and found a new introduction screen. Not only has the interface been updated to look cleaner and more modern, but there are also sample photos and generated short videos, meaning you can get an early look at whether Google Photos’ AI results are any good:
From the video above, you can see that when the static photo originally taken with the dog on the grass starts moving, the two women behind look like they’re celebrating the dog, scattering lots of glitter.
The screen also includes some simple descriptions, a disclaimer about experimental features, and a “Try now” button. This popup may appear when users open Google Photos for the first time after the feature launches.
The interface has changed a bit too. Previously there were stacked pill-shaped buttons, but now they’re gone, replaced by three large rectangular buttons at the bottom, labeled “Subtle movements,” “Go wild,” and “I’m feeling lucky,” among other prompts.

So this feature seems to let the AI generate content on its own, with no way to provide prompt instructions to direct what the AI generates. Although there’s no mention of what technology is being used, since it’s a Google tool, it’s almost certainly powered by Gemini:

When converting photos to video, the generation speed may take up to a minute at most—not particularly slow, but not fast either.
Although the latest Google Photos APK can unearth these contents, the feature still cannot be used normally within Google Photos itself. When trying to generate a video using one of the prompts, an error appears:

Lastly, I should remind you that APK teardowns predict potential future features based on code in development, so they may not necessarily make it into the final release. That said, in this era of AI, I’d guess the odds are pretty high.
This year, Google Photos has also added more and more AI features. At the end of May, Google announced that the AI Auto Frame and Reimagine features in Google Photos would be rolled out to all Android devices (previously only available on Pixel), with iOS following later this year.
