How to set ChatGPT Search as the search engine in Chrome
OpenAI has released a dedicated extension for Chrome. Once installed, the search engine becomes ChatGPT Search, which is the simplest way.
But if you want more flexibility, you can choose yourself when to use Google and when to use ChatGPT Search. In that case, don’t install the extension; instead, add the following in Chrome settings.
Open Chrome settings, go to the search engine options, and click the “Add” button to the right of site search:
Enter any name; I’ll use ChatGPT. The search shortcut is the keyword you activate when you want to use ChatGPT Search. If I set it to ‘chat’, then in the future, typing ‘chat’ + space in the address bar will activate ChatGPT Search. Without entering that, it will use the browser’s default search engine, such as Google. In the URL field at the bottom, enter ‘https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s’:
I type chat, then press the keyboard spacebar:

Enter any search query, and it will open ChatGPT and enable the ChatGPT Search feature:
How to set the search engine to ChatGPT Search in Microsoft Edge
Microsoft Edge is also a browser developed on the Chromium core, so it can also install OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search extension. However, it currently shows a security issue, and after installation, you need to go into extension management to manually enable it:
Of course, just like Chrome, you can manually add the ChatGPT Search engine in settings.
After opening Microsoft Edge settings, go to “Privacy, Search, and Services”, scroll down to find “Address bar and search”:
Enter “Manage Search Engines”:
Click Add in the top right corner.
Search engine name can be filled in as ChatGPT. For the shortcut, set the string you want to use to enable ChatGPT Search. I set mine to “chat.” In the future, typing chat + space in the address bar will activate ChatGPT Search. Enter “https://chatgpt.com/?q=%s” in the URL field, then click Add when done.
Then you can open the address bar to test. Enter the shortcut string you set and press the spacebar. “Search ChatGPT” will appear on the left. Enter the content you’re looking for, and ChatGPT will open:
How to set ChatGPT Search as the search engine in Firefox
Firefox does not offer a feature for manually adding search engines, and OpenAI has not released an extension for Firefox either, so under normal circumstances, this is currently not possible.
However, one third-party developer has developed a ChatGPT Search extensionIt claims to be able to change the search engine to ChatGPT search. If you need it, you can give it a try. The only thing to note is that it currently shows: “This extension has not been monitored by Mozilla for security. Before installing, please confirm that you trust this extension enough.”
