Google adds AI context-aware feature to Gemini

Google is trying to bridge the gap between smart assistants and personal assistants, and it’s doing this by rolling out a new beta feature for Gemini. This feature is called “Personal Intelligence,” which allows Gemini to tailor its responses by linking to your Google ecosystem, including Gmail, Photos, Search, and even your YouTube history.

Google adds AI contextual awareness features to Gemini

While Gemini can already access other Google ecosystem applications, this new AI tool will be able to fully access your data range, powered by Gemini 3 for proactive insights. The advantage of Personal Intelligence lies in reasoning across complex sources and extracting specific details from emails or photos to answer your questions. It can combine this content across text, photos, and videos to provide unique, tailored answers.

The experience is turned off by default, and if you choose to enable it, you can decide which apps Gemini can access. If you allow the AI tool to access other Google apps and services, it won’t invoke that feature for every query. The goal of this section is to only work when Gemini thinks a personalized response would be helpful. Since the data Gemini accesses already exists on Google’s servers, Google says you don’t need to share sensitive data outside the ecosystem to personalize your experience either.

To demonstrate this featureGoogle Shared search results and related information about 2019 Honda van tire sizes. While any AI model can provide specifications, Gemini has Personal Intelligence that can search Gmail inbox for photos containing vehicle trim level and license plate numbers. By analyzing other photos, it can recommend all-season tires instead of standard tires.

It’s worth noting that Gemini doesn’t use Personal Intelligence on sensitive topics like health data, but it can discuss this information if you explicitly request it. Google states that Gemini wasn’t directly trained on your Gmail or Google Photos data—it simply uses a retrieval method to find information relevant to your queries. Using a van as an example, this means the model hasn’t “learned” the user’s license plate number; it directly cites it to answer the question.

Personal Intelligence begins rolling out today to eligible Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US, with wide availability expected over the next week. Like most new Gemini features, Personal Intelligence will expand to more countries and join Gemini’s free tier in the near future.
