Capcom shares RE Engine upgrade plan! Confirms it will be developed into an “AI-generated game engine.”

According to a new plan Capcom recently announced, the company will further improve its in-house game engine, RE Engine, transforming it into an engine capable of AI game generation in order to speed up some of the more tedious game development work. Notably, Capcom had previously confirmed that it had already begun incorporating AI tools into its game development process for assistance.

Starting with Resident Evil 7, released in 2017, Capcom officially began using this in-house engine, delivering visuals and technical quality that amazed players. After that, the team also used the engine to develop Street Fighter 6, Devil May Cry 5, Dragon’s Dogma 2, and other series outside Resident Evil. Now, Capcom has once again come forward to share more about the next steps for RE Engine; however, this new plan could spark considerable controversy.

At the recent Open Conference RE:2026 panel, Capcom shared its future plans for RE Engine, and team programmer Satoshi Ishida officially unveiled a next-generation RE Engine project called “REX,” which will upgrade the engine and transform it into an “AI-generated game engine.”

However, Capcom also emphasized that the AI tools provided by REX will mainly be used to assist at the “game development” level, thereby improving development efficiency for future new titles while ensuring production quality, and that no AI-generated content will directly appear in the final products players encounter. Therefore, Capcom’s current plans for how REX will be applied remain consistent with the company’s past stance on AI-related technology.

At the 2026 shareholders meeting, when discussing the application of AI technology, Capcom stated that it did not intend to directly introduce any AI-generated content into games. Instead, it would use the technology for other game development-related purposes, such as improving visual quality and helping conceptualize content for titles, while the resulting content would still be handcrafted by artists.

For Capcom, 2026 is definitely a banner year. They first officially released Resident Evil Requiem in February this year, achieving impressive sales. After that, the company went on to release three highly acclaimed titles: Pragmata, Monster Hunter Stories 3, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. With the REX Engine now officially in use, Capcom has the opportunity to become an even more prolific game company; whether it can maintain the quality standards of recent years remains to be seen.
