Hackathon is something that friends working in programming have probably heard of. Every year, many tech companies hold hackathon events to find potential talents or outstanding works from the activities. This year, at the 2025 ElevenLabs London Hackathon, a project appeared that sparked heated discussion online. The winner of this ElevenLabs London Hackathon is a project called Gibberlink. In the video provided by Gibberlink, two AI agents appear. Initially, they converse in English without knowing the other is also an AI. After discovering that both are AIs, they switch to a form of audio communication that only the two of them can understand, and use it to complete a hotel reservation.
According to foreign media reports, Gibberlink uses a GGWave’s technology converts regular speech into sound waves that humans cannot understand. Though these sound waves are meaningless to the human ear, for AI agents they serve as conversations capable of transmitting data at higher speeds.
After the video was released, some people questioned that the sound waves in the video all sounded the same — if the video didn’t have subtitles, who would know whether the sound waves transmitted between the two AI agents were actually capable of communication. Gibberlink may have anticipated this confusion from viewers, so they also provided a Gibberlink mode for everyone to try out. The editor tested it themselves and found that the two Gibberlinks do seem to actually communicate. Testing with two phones, if the subtitles displayed by Gibberlink are correct, then the two Gibberlinks are genuinely communicating.
