Sometimes when people watch movies and TV shows and see actors made up to look old, can’t help but吐槽 how terrible the special effects or makeup are. Actually, it’s not the fault of the effects artists or makeup artists—the real issue is that human facial aging is inherently a complex process. Gender, race, and lifestyle all shape how you look when you age, and while the effects and makeup in movies and TV shows can give actors’ faces more wrinkles and sagging skin, they can’t truly depict what the actors would look like when old. Recently, the University of North Carolina and the University of Maryland jointly developed “MyTimeMachine (MyTM),” which only needs 50 photos to use AI to generate pictures of you when you were young and when you’re old.

Traditional facial aging effects and makeup techniques have limitations, although they can generate seemingly realistic aging images. However, the results tend to be monotonous and lack accurate capture of individual unique facial features. “MyTimeMachine (MyTM)”, jointly developed by the University of North Carolina and the University of Maryland, cleverly combines a global aging model with personal photos, achieving highly personalized age transformation with just 50 photos.

MyTimeMachine combines personal aging features with global aging features, then uses StyleGAN2 to regenerate images at various ages. MyTimeMachine can precisely capture the subtle facial features of an individual as they change with age.

In addition to generating images, MyTimeMachine also extends to video, allowing it to create aging effects for characters in videos while maintaining high quality and consistency.

The teams from the University of North Carolina and the University of Maryland have released an introduction featuring video and image examples generated using MyTimeMachine. If you’re interested, you can watch the video below to learn more. MyTimeMachine is not yet available to the public, but it’s believed that once it launches, it will bring innovation to current movie and TV special effects, making aging effects look less stiff.
