iPadOS 15 will launch new features to improve the available memory of a single app for large-capacity memory models

iPadOS 15 has been in testing for some time. If the rumors are correct, this system will be released during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday to all users who buy iPads and have enough models to upgrade to this version of the system. Interestingly, this version has been rumored to have performance improvements, specifically, an increase in the memory allowed by a single app. Judging from the information provided by an iPad OS App developer, this news is definitely at least close to ten:

▲As iPadOS 15 is about to be updated, some apps that already require more memory are expected to improve performance along with the system update.

If you want to talk about the productivity performance of iPad, then iPadOS running behind it naturally plays an important role. This system brings many useful features unique to large-screen devices to the iPad, and there is even a trend of making the iPad more and more similar to macOS in use. However, iPadOS is still not good enough, and it needs continuous updates from the original manufacturer to become more and more usable.

Currently, iPadOS 14 still has a well-known limitation, which is that the memory limit allowed for a single app is 5GB. This limit will vary depending on the memory capacity of different iPad models, but the upper limit is roughly 5GB. Even if you buy an iPad with more than 8GB or even 16GB of memory, this limitation will still be there, limiting the scope of developers’ use of system performance:

▲iPadOS used to have higher limits on the memory capacity that apps can use, so some apps that require more resources, such as drawing and editing, were relatively limited in use.

Most apps can still run well in the face of this limitation, but this memory will eventually have some impact on some semi-professional-level apps. If the upper limit can be raised, there may be better operational performance. Of course, raising the limit sounds simple, but it involves Apple’s memory management of its own operating system, and may require some other improvements to overcome.

Now, as the new version of iPadOS will be launched this week, this limit has also been confirmed by the author of the drawing app “Artstudio Pro”, and the upper limit will be increased. The updated iPadOS allows apps to use up to 12GB of memory. Of course, this number is mainly based on the M1 version of the iPad Pro starting at 16GB. iPads with other memory capacities (note not storage capacity) will be unlocked to varying degrees. Taking the 8GB iPad Pro as an example, the new system allows a single app to use up to 6GB of memory:

▲The new iPadOS will bring more performance improvements to developers and creators.

After adding this setting, for environments that require professional drawing, 3D modeling, photo editing, or similar applications, the App should be able to mobilize more system memory to complete complex editing actions. Even more sophisticated or larger-scale productions can be edited.

This feature is currently known to be confirmed on iPad Pro, and the author of Artstudio Pro also added the word “available memory improvement” in the latest update. As for other iPads, such as the iPad Mini, which has a completely redesigned appearance and all its features are quite attractive, perhaps because the native memory is only 4GB at most, this feature will not be used for the time being.
