After the iPad mini and MacBook Pro M6 the day before yesterday, Apple launched yet another new product today: the long-rumored PROLED XDR MacBook Pro with a touch OLED screen. This time Apple is making two big moves at once: touchscreen and Dynamic Island both arrive on the all-new MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR display. It is available in 14-inch and 16-inch models, powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, with up to 128GB of unified memory, up to 16TB of storage, and battery life of up to 24 hours. Pre-orders open October 30 Taiwan time, with availability starting Friday, November 6.

PROLED XDR: A Full Overview of Tandem OLED Specifications

PROLED XDR is the core of this redesign. Apple uses tandem OLED technology, stacking two layers of self-emissive pixels to increase brightness and uniformity and reduce the internal reflections of traditional OLED designs. The display engine can control color and brightness per pixel on a timescale of less than one millisecond while compensating for content, pixel wear, temperature, and ambient light; every panel is factory-calibrated to ensure consistent performance across different machines.

The key hardware specs are as follows: HDR and SDR peak brightness up to 2,000 nits, contrast ratio up to 10,000,000:1; ProMotion variable refresh rate drops as low as 10Hz to save power and goes up to 120Hz to keep motion smooth. The color gamut covers both P3 and Adobe RGB, with a single preset mode switching between the two color spaces; Rec. 2020 coverage exceeds 80%, a key figure for HDR video editing and color grading. Screen sizes are 14.2 inches and 16.3 inches (narrow-bezel design). An anti-reflective coating is standard across all models, with optional nano-texture glass precision-etched into the cover glass. In addition, the classic glowing Apple Logo has returned on the A cover on the back of the screen.

Touchscreen and Dynamic Island make their debut

The MacBook Pro features a touchscreen for the first time. The touch sensors are integrated directly inside the display panel rather than added as an extra layer, which reduces latency. Everyday use includes scrolling webpages, pinch-to-zoom, and dragging and dropping slides across presentations; professional scenarios include designers using the entire screen as a canvas, musicians playing software instruments directly on the screen, and developers testing the touch responsiveness of iOS and iPadOS apps on the Mac. Existing apps are compatible without modification because macOS automatically converts touches into clicks; new system gesture APIs let developers build native touch experiences.

Apple also listed the first wave of third-party apps that support touch, including Notion, Canva, Zoom, the Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, Blender, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, Shapr3D, and Algoriddim djay Pro, rolling out later this year. To accommodate touch, the hinge has been redesigned to provide more stable support, and during video calls, real-time video stabilization smooths the image when you touch the screen.

As for the Dynamic Island, it serves as a new entry point for Live Activities on the Mac, letting you quickly view incoming calls and music playback and interact directly with a click, and also tap to accept AirDrop transfer requests.

Thinner and lighter, with the chip and peripherals ready in sync.

The more efficient OLED display stack allowed the chassis to slim down: the 14-inch model now weighs 1.38 kg (about 220 g lighter than the previous generation), and the 16-inch model weighs 1.82 kg (about 320 g lighter); thickness is reduced by nearly 1 mm on the 16-inch model and half a mm on the 14-inch model. The audio system is upgraded to six speakers, with bass depth increased by 50%; the port lineup remains Thunderbolt 5, and the camera is upgraded to a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera paired with studio-quality microphones.

On the chip side, it uses the M5 Pro and M5 Max launched in March this year. These two chips are built on TSMC’s N3P process. The M5 Pro has up to an 18-core CPU paired with a 20-core GPU, and the M5 Max has up to an 18-core CPU paired with a 40-core GPU. The Neural Engine is claimed to be 6.9 times faster than the M1 Pro at processing prompts for large language models. Unified memory tops out at 128GB and SSD at 16TB, which are essential for running large models locally and 8K video workflows. On the software side, macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence integrated leads the way, and Traditional Chinese is among the first wave of supported languages; some features that rely on server-side models have a daily usage cap, and Siri AI is also not yet available in the EU.

Observation: checking off a decade’s worth of bucket-list items all at once.

What makes this update rare is the “simultaneous” part: OLED, touch, Dynamic Island, and lightweighting—four things people have been asking for years—all arrive at once rather than being rolled out slowly over several generations. The touch sensor is built into the panel rather than added as an external layer, showing that Apple’s goal is touch latency close to that of a phone, and the hinge has been redesigned in tandem. Compared with March’s “quiet update” to the M5 Pro/M5 Max models, which only upgraded the chip and raised prices, October’s update is the one that qualifies as a generational redesign. Although touchscreen laptops in the Windows camp have been common for years, Mac waited until the OLED era to follow suit—specifically for the integrated in-panel touch feel. The only thing to watch is how quickly the software keeps up: the touch app list looks impressive, but how it actually feels will only be clear after launch on November 6.
