How does the M6 MacBook Pro differ from the M3 and M4 models?

Apple has officially announced the new generation MacBook Pro, powered by the latest M6 chip. Compared with last year’s M5 models, the new processor offers up to 30% better GPU performance and up to 25% faster AI computing. While most users don’t upgrade their laptops every year, the improvements brought by the M6 will be even more noticeable for those still using older models.

According to official Apple data, compared with a MacBook Pro equipped with the M1 chip, the M6 delivers up to 13x faster performance when running real-time inference on large language models (LLMs), and up to 11.7x faster performance when rendering with ray tracing in Blender.

How is the M6 MacBook Pro different from the M3 and M4 models?

Even users with M3 or M4 models may feel the value of upgrading. After all, through the iterations from M3 to M4 and then to M5, Apple has continued to strengthen compute performance, while M6 further adopts an all-new 2nm process and adds two CPU cores and two GPU cores compared with M5 and M4. As for M3, it has four fewer CPU cores, making the gap even more obvious.

More powerful hardware specifications

The M6 chip features a 12-core CPU and a 12-core GPU, and is equipped with dual 16-core Neural Engines, while increasing memory bandwidth to 170GB/s. By comparison, M3 and M4 are equipped with only a single 16-core Neural Engine, with memory bandwidth of 100GB/s and 120GB/s, respectively. In terms of storage and memory, the new machine comes standard with 16GB of unified memory and a 1TB SSD, starting at $1,999.

Practical upgrades beneath a familiar exterior

In terms of design, the MacBook Pro M6 has not undergone a major redesign, and its overall form is almost carried over from previous generations. The chassis still uses a unibody aluminum design, and the dimensions of the 14-inch model are the same as those of the M3 and M4 generations. The display still uses a 120Hz Liquid Retina XDR Mini LED panel, but since the M4 generation, SDR brightness has increased from 600 nits to 1000 nits, so it offers better visual performance in everyday use environments. In addition, the six-speaker audio system and three-microphone array are fully retained.

As for the webcam, the M6 features the same 12-megapixel Center Stage camera as the M4, which can automatically track the user’s position; the older M3 still uses a 1080p FaceTime HD camera.

Backed by Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6

Connectivity is one of the key highlights of this upgrade. The MacBook Pro M6 officially supports Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while the M3, M4, and M5 models remain at Wi‑Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 specifications. For users who frequently perform high-speed file transfers, streaming workloads, or connect multiple wireless devices, the new-generation wireless technology will deliver a better experience.

Battery life and expandability are further enhanced.

In terms of battery life, the M6’s battery capacity has increased to 72.4Wh, a slight increase from the M3’s 70Wh, so the official maximum battery life is up to 24 hours, longer than the M3’s 22 hours. However, the M4 model has also already reached 24 hours of battery life, so the difference is not particularly significant. In terms of expandability, the M6 offers one more USB-C port than the M3, making it more convenient to connect external storage devices, displays, and various accessories.

Is the MacBook Pro M6 worth upgrading to?

Since Apple began its full transition to custom Apple Silicon chips six years ago, the Mac lineup has made significant progress in performance and energy efficiency. The leap from the 2020 Intel-based MacBook Pro to the first-generation M1 models was itself a revolutionary upgrade, and subsequent generations have continued to deliver steady gains. Therefore, even if you are currently using an M3 or M4 model, upgrading to M6 remains appealing as long as your work involves high-load applications such as video editing, 3D rendering, software development, or local AI model computation.

However, price is also a factor that must be considered. Due to price adjustments in recent years, the MacBook Pro M6 starts at $1,999. By comparison, the M3 was available for only $1,600 when it launched that year. Although its base configuration had only 8GB of memory and 512GB of storage, the price difference between the two is still quite significant. In addition, the M6 continues the user-favorite Space Black color option, while the entry-level M3 did not offer this choice at the time.

Another upgrade that is quite appealing to professionals is multi-display support. The M6 can drive two external displays at the same time while keeping the built-in screen active. Although the M4 and M5 already have the same capability, the M3 still requires closing the laptop lid to connect two external displays.

Overall, if your workflow relies heavily on AI applications—such as running local large language models (LLMs), machine learning development, or other neural network computing tasks—the new-generation neural network engine and higher memory bandwidth in M6 will deliver a fairly significant performance advantage; for users still using M1 or older models, the upgrade will be even more compelling.
