Except for 《Taipei GTA: Go Wild in TaipeiBesides that, I recently came across another game, 《機甲大戰-台北》, also made by a Taiwanese developer and likewise set in Taipei. I tried it out and it’s pretty fun—you can control a giant robot to protect Taipei from enemy invasion, and not only are there multiple robots to choose from, but each one also has unique attack abilities. I recommend it to everyone too.

Taiwanese developer creates the web game Mecha Battle – Taipei, in which players control giant robots to defeat enemies and protect Taipei’s twelve districts.

Mecha Battle – Taipei was created by a developer named Tsai Wen-Tsung. According to what he shared on Facebook, he developed the game because as a child he fantasized about piloting a super robot. In the game, you can pilot a mech and go on a rampage in downtown Taipei, defeating enemies and protecting the city. Be careful, though: destroying buildings costs money, and the building costs are directly based on Taipei’s real-price registration data (laughs). He also made a trailer video:

The most appealing thing about this game is that it turns Taipei into a mecha battlefield.

Offers multiple gameplay modes. In Campaign mode, for example, the player’s goal is to defend Taipei’s twelve administrative districts; not only do you pilot robots into battle, you also need to monitor the situation in each district, along with funds, public opinion, mech upgrades, pilot skills, defensive facilities, and other elements. If you just want to enjoy combat, you can choose “Battle” mode and set the opponent, difficulty, number of remaining units, and battle time yourself; you can even adjust daytime, dusk, nighttime, or the day-night cycle to create different combat scenarios.

The combat system isn’t just about trading attacks either. Robots can perform combos, guard-breaking moves, special techniques, and ultimate arts, and when hit, they may also suffer damage to body parts. For example, if an arm or head is blown off, related moves may become unusable or weaker; damage to the legs affects movement speed and flight height, adding a certain degree of difficulty.

What’s even more interesting is that once a building is hit, the entire building collapses. If you knock enemies flying into a building, it can deal even more damage, adding a lot more variety to combat.

In addition to the campaign and single matches, the game also offers an “Endless” mode, where players choose an administrative district to deploy in, face wave after wave of incoming enemy aircraft, and compare performance based on the number of waves survived and city losses. It also supports multiplayer gameplay.

Controls support keyboard, mouse, and controller; buttons can also be customized, and different graphics quality settings are available. For first-time players, it is recommended to go through the roughly three-minute tutorial first, and start playing for real after getting familiar with the basic controls.

Once you enter the game, choose the mode you want to play. If it’s your first time playing, we recommend starting with the tutorial to learn the basic controls—it’ll make the game easier to play:

The tutorial is short and very easy to get started with; the screen shows hints for what function each key represents:

In Campaign mode, the left side lists the available missions, while the middle shows the details of that mission and tells you what the objectives are. On the right, you select the robots to deploy, and next to each one it indicates its attribute, such as Assault, Mobility, Guard, Melee, and Destruction:

Money in the game can be used to upgrade base facilities, so whatever you do, don’t keep destroying buildings, or you’ll go bankrupt. Defeating enemies grants corresponding money rewards:

The robot portion can of course also be upgraded:

After entering the game, if there are damaged buildings, it will immediately show how much money is deducted:

Since it’s set in Taipei, of course you can find some famous landmarks, like Taipei 101 and the Taipei Nanshan Plaza building. If these were destroyed, that would be a big deal—you’d immediately end up in debt:

Every robot has unique attack moves, shown in the bottom left corner—the Q, E, and R keys. R is the ultimate, which can only be used once in a long while:
