YouTube’s homepage now allows custom recommendation shelves and a simplified top navigation bar, taking the personalized experience to the next level.

YouTube, the audiovisual giant, is carrying out a profound overhaul of how its platform homepage works. The core aim of this update is to give users greater autonomous control, allowing everyone to precisely shape the content they want to see while greatly improving the convenience of frequently used in-app features. In the latest feature update, eligible users can now replace traditional topic tabs with “Custom Feeds”; at the same time, YouTube is testing a newly designed top navigation bar on mobile, bringing the most frequently accessed “Subscriptions” closer to the core position on the homepage.

YouTube’s homepage now offers customizable recommendation rows and a simplified top navigation bar, taking the personalized experience to the next level.

This change marks a shift in YouTube’s recommendation algorithm strategy. Earlier this year, YouTube began testing a “custom feed” feature on a small scale, allowing users to turn their personal viewing preferences into a dedicated dynamic recommendation feed by entering keywords or descriptions. Now, this feature has moved beyond its initial experimental phase and has officially become a core feature that YouTube is actively promoting and hopes to deeply integrate into users’ daily viewing habits.

Now, users can easily create their own custom feed simply by clicking the plus (+) button at the top of the homepage. The underlying logic of this technology is similar to how YouTube Music uses AI to turn user ideas into personalized playlists: you are no longer limited to popular videos passively pushed by the system, but can proactively define the scope of content you want to watch.

🎨 Say hello to a refreshed @YouTube homepage experience! There’s a new simplified top bar, with quick access to your subscriptions alongside Movies & TV, Live, Music, and your custom feeds. Custom feeds are your personalized saved searches that go beyond just keywords; describe a type of content, a topic, or even just a vibe you’re looking for, and browse the recommendations that are continuously updated as new content is available. You can add, edit, or remove your custom feeds in the top bar at any time.

Whether it’s a specific professional topic (such as “drone photography tips”), a content type (such as “10-minute cooking tutorials”), or even a particular mood or atmosphere (such as “rain sound Vlogs for late-night relaxation”), YouTube can accurately capture your needs and generate a dedicated content channel. Even better, this isn’t a one-time search result: when new related videos are published on the platform, the customized feed will continue to update dynamically, becoming your own personalized TV channel.

Regarding quotas and access permissions, YouTube differentiates between regular accounts and paid members:

  • Regular account: You can create and save up to 3 custom subscription sources at a time.
  • YouTube Premium members: enjoy greater flexibility and save up to 8 custom feeds.

All custom channels you create will be arranged horizontally at the top of the home page, making it easy to switch between, edit, or delete them at any time. The feature is currently rolling out first in the US market, available to logged-in users aged 13 and over using the English interface. It is also supported on mobile devices and desktop, but it only works if users have both “Watch history” and “Search history” enabled on their account so the system can run its algorithms.

In addition to custom feeds, YouTube is also testing a new, simplified top navigation bar on mobile for the Home tab. The highlight of this redesign is that it breaks away from the previous deeper menu hierarchy by moving Subscriptions directly to the top navigation bar, placing it alongside popular feeds such as Live and Music. For users who have purchased or rented video content, the navigation bar will also show an additional Movies & TV option. This seemingly simple tweak actually significantly shortens the path for users to switch between different content modules, keeping visual focus more on the creators and channels they truly care about.

Overall, this YouTube update demonstrates a transition from “the algorithm guesses what you like” to “users decide what they want to watch.” Through a two-pronged approach of custom recommendation feeds and a simplified navigation bar, users not only gain greater control over content but also elevate their personalized audiovisual entertainment experience to a whole new level.
