StarCraft Invaded by AI Bots! Defeats Multiple Top Players with Bizarre Tactics

At this year’s BlizzCon, Blizzard Entertainment surprise-announced a new StarCraft game expected to launch in 2030. Although this entry will be a third-person shooter, the news has once again sparked a lot of discussion around this classic real-time strategy series. At the same time, the original game in the series, StarCraft: Brood War, has recently been invaded by “AI bots,” which have been defeating multiple top professional players one after another with bizarre tactics and superhuman unit control.

According to game records shared by members of the StarCraft: Brood War AI community, an AI bot named “Pluto” competed under the account “^333^” and not only quickly climbed to the top of the StarCraft: Remastered global player competitive ladder in a short time, but even defeated top professional players such as Larva, Iris, Ret, and Paralyze.

Pluto is a neural network with 315 million parameters, built specifically for the 2026 Computer Olympiad StarCraft AI competition, where it defeated another AI bot, PurpleWave, 4:1 in the finals to become the champion.

Notably, Pluto is completely different from traditional computer opponents that execute tactics through predefined scripts; this AI, built with modern technology, can continuously improve its skills through reinforcement learning and self-play. According to the development team, Pluto’s neural network can manage every race, matchup, opening tactic, and unit over the course of an entire StarCraft match.

Bizarrely, the development team emphasized in an interview that they had never intended for “Pluto” to play online directly against human players, and according to members of the Brood War AI community, unknown individuals obtained this AI bot and modified it into a version capable of running in StarCraft: Remastered, even deploying it into the official ladder competitive mode without the development team’s permission.

Moreover, players also claimed that this copied “Pluto” used a map hack, further completely undermining the fairness of StarCraft matches. However, because “Pluto” was trained with the fog of war displayed normally, some people believe that enabling this hack would instead throw the AI into confusion.

As for how well this AI bot actually plays? After analyzing footage of “Pluto” defeating professional player Paralyze, StarCraft streamer Artosis found that “Pluto” completely broke the tactical framework and logic most commonly used by Terran players, assembling a bizarre army composed of Marines, Medics, Tanks, Ghosts, Wraiths, and Firebats.

Yet, under Pluto’s superhuman micro, this seemingly chaotic team composition became utterly lethal. In battle, it would go all out to protect a Wraith and have that unit specifically target High Templars, while using the Ghost’s Lockdown ability to tie down enemy units. Even more astonishingly, he could simultaneously orchestrate and fight battles across multiple fronts.

Moreover, in his match against Zerg professional player Larva, “Pluto” used only 6 Barracks to continuously produce Marines and Medics. He skipped Missile Turrets entirely and did not upgrade attack or armor, relying instead on surrounds and more precise control to successfully suppress Larva’s Mutalisk forces, before launching a counterattack that won him the game.

Although Pluto’s actions per minute (APM) can peak at several thousand, the underlying model of this AI bot cannot actually make several thousand decisions per minute. Instead, it can only execute an action every 6 frames, meaning it can perform 240 actions per minute. By this measure, Pluto’s operating speed is actually on par with top StarCraft players, but in terms of operational efficiency, the precision AI achieves through machine learning is still far higher than that of humans.

As for Pluto’s performance, AI researcher “evanthebouncy” Evan Chen also described it as a “beast with absolute instinct,” saying that Pluto has near-perfect micro-management ability; however, it still has weaknesses such as poor building placement, limited long-term tactical planning ability, and a tendency to be at a disadvantage when facing unfamiliar tactics.

Since AI bots still have a huge advantage in mechanics, the StarCraft player community has reported the account “^333^” to Blizzard Entertainment and asked it to remove “Pluto” from the ladder.
