Want to try an AI Agent but don’t want to bear API costs upfront or buy a high-end GPU? This video compiles four free API KEY model channels—Agnes AI, NVIDIA, Hermes built-in models, and OpenCode—and uses Hermes to demonstrate API Key, Endpoint/Base URL, model testing, and switching methods, ideal for users looking for an entry-level model for Hermes or OpenClaw.

Are free models suitable for running AI Agents?

If you just want to get familiar with how to operate Agent and test simple tasks, free cloud models are usually easier to get started with than struggling with small local models on a computer with limited hardware. However, free does not mean there is no cost: model capabilities, speed, available quota, and availability hours may all be limited, and they are not necessarily suitable for long-running or highly reliable production work.

The video recommends first using free models to establish the workflow, then deciding based on task complexity whether to switch to a paid API, Coding Plan, or higher-end model. If the work involves company confidential information, customer data, personal data, or other sensitive content, first confirm the platform’s data usage policy, and do not send sensitive data directly into free cloud services.

Agnes AI: Easy to apply, ideal for first-time integration.

The video first demonstrates Agnes AIAfter completing account registration, you can create an API Key, then add a custom Endpoint in Hermes’s model provider settings, enter the Base URL and API Key, and test the available models. In the video walkthrough, it is recommended to choose Agnes V2.5 Flash first; its response speed and Chinese capabilities are suitable for general beginner tasks.

API Key should be kept secure and not posted publicly in articles, screenshots, or chat groups. If you no longer use it in the future, it is also recommended that you return to the platform to revoke the old key and create a new one.

NVIDIA free models: plenty of choices, but keep an eye on stability.

The NVIDIA Developer Platform offers multiple model endpoints. The application process includes an account, developer information, and phone verification. Once completed, you can select the free models currently available and generate an API Key, then enter the Base URL and key into the Agent’s model provider settings.

The list of free models changes over time, and during peak periods you may encounter rate limiting or unstable connections. In practice, start by testing with short tasks; if an Agent frequently fails midway, switch to another model or try again later, and don’t treat free Endpoints as your only source for production services.

What should be noted about Hermes built-in models and OpenCode?

Hermes’s built-in model settings require the fewest steps, but the default option isn’t necessarily free. Before enabling it, confirm the model label and billing method to avoid using a paid model directly. OpenCode may also offer free models, but registration and payment setup may include credit card and auto-reload features. Before use, be sure to check whether auto top-up can be disabled and confirm whether the currently selected model is billed.

Other platforms such as OpenRouter also offer free plans from time to time, but the list, quotas, and terms change quickly. The content in this article and video is based on the interface and plans at the time of recording and does not mean permanent free or unlimited use; please refer to each platform’s current announcements.

How to Choose Among Four Free Model Channels?

For first-time setup, it’s best to start with Agnes AI, which has a more intuitive application and integration process; if you need to try multiple models, you can look into NVIDIA later; if you’re already using Hermes, you can check the built-in free options directly; after you’re familiar with API billing and account settings, evaluate OpenCode or other model aggregation platforms. Whichever you choose, you should first run small-scale tests and avoid entering sensitive data.
