Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, which first arrived on the PS2 in 2002, is considered by many players to be one of the most iconic video game adaptations in the Dragon Ball Z series. It not only kicked off the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai video game series, which went on to release three titles in total, but also laid the foundation for another adaptation series, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi.

After the brand-new generative AI-assisted coding technology “Vibe-Coding” gradually flourished, players have also been bringing various classic games to browsers one after another, and most recently, a fan has finally made Dragon Ball Z: Budokai a game playable through browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.Play Nowworks, and even supports mobile devices.

At present, “Vibe-Coding” has become a highly discussed topic. Before this technology emerged, if players wanted to port a classic game, they first had to reverse-engineer the original game, trying to analyze the programming code used when the game was developed at the time, then convert it into C++ code usable on modern platforms, and finally begin the porting process. But with the help of generative AI, many complex and time-consuming tasks have become faster and easier, causing a large number of game porting projects to spring up, and classic titles such as Halo: Combat Evolved and Need for Speed: Underground 2 have already been released as web versions through this approach.

And recently, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai from the PS2 has officially become another classic game revived in a similar way. It is a 1v1 fighting game set in the Dragon Ball Z universe. Although it only received an average score of 67 when it was released, over the years it has gradually become a cult favorite among fans and has had a profound influence on subsequent titles.

The porting team describes the web version of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai as an “independent, non-commercial open technical research showcase.” It not only fully includes complete content such as Story Mode, Versus Mode, World Tournament, Practice Mode, and “Mr. Satan’s Legend,” but also runs smoothly at 60fps. In addition, the team has included a complete save file in this version, allowing players to immediately access all unlockable content from the start.

It is worth noting that, because this porting project is not affiliated with any rights holders of the original Dragon Ball Z: Budokai—including Sony, Bandai Namco, Shueisha, and Toei Animation—this version may also be taken down in the future at the request of the copyright owners.

In addition to releasing a web version that can be played directly in a browser, some community developers have opted for more complete PC port projects. However, this trend may soon begin to cool down, as some generative AI platforms have started imposing restrictions on copyrighted content to prevent their tools from being used in development projects that infringe copyright.
