As rumored, in this new iPhone 18 series, Apple only introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with no mention of the standard iPhone 18. This time, the iPhone 18 Pro series comes with fairly substantial upgrades—not only is performance significantly improved, but with the new-generation vapor chamber, heat dissipation and battery life have also gotten stronger. Of course, there are also plenty of features integrated with Apple Intelligence, and we’ve rounded them up for you below.

The iPhone 18 Pro series is equipped with a 2nm A20 Pro and a variable aperture camera, with the Pro Max offering up to 45 hours of video playback.

The iPhone 18 Pro series is equipped with the A20 Pro built on a 2-nanometer process. The CPU maintains a 6-core design, now comprising 2 new “super cores” and 4 energy-efficient cores, with each core integrating a neural network accelerator. Apple claims the super cores deliver up to 20% faster performance, describing them as achieving desktop-class levels and being the fastest CPU cores in smartphones today:

The GPU, meanwhile, gets 7 cores, with Apple claiming graphics performance improves by up to 40%, while also boosting performance for AI tasks such as image generation. A new-generation neural network accelerator inside the GPU supports 8-bit floating-point operations, delivering 2x speed and enabling on-device execution of third-party large language models. Not only that, a second neural network engine has been added, bringing the total to 32 cores and doubling computing power.

Memory bandwidth also increases by 50%, making it the widest memory interface in iPhone history.

The iPhone 18 Pro series features a next-generation vapor chamber with 3 times the thermal surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro. Internally, it uses deionized water circulation to carry away heat, and the materials include 80% recycled stainless steel, thermal graphite, and what Apple calls the industry’s first nano-twinned copper.

Apple says that with this cooling system, the sustained performance of the iPhone 18 Pro is up to 40% higher than the iPhone 17 Pro, and up to 2 times higher compared to the iPhone 16 Pro and earlier models:

Apple also showcased “Monster Hunter: Travelers,” a collaboration between Tencent Games and CAPCOM. This game leverages the A20 Pro’s 7-core GPU to deliver up to 120 frames per second on iPhone, with support for MetalFX upscaling and spatial audio. It is expected to launch later this year.

Heat dissipation improved, and battery life followed suit. On eSIM-only models, the iPhone 18 Pro delivers up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches 45 hours. In other words, the iPhone 18 Pro’s video playback battery life has now matched that of the previous-generation iPhone 17 Pro Max.

This year, Apple also introduced a new battery model that better reflects everyday usage, factoring in scenarios such as taking photos and using AI. Under this model, the iPhone 18 Pro lasts up to 24 hours on a single charge, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasts 30 hours.

Wired charging speed has also improved—the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50% in about 15 minutes, and around 5 minutes of charging can provide roughly 6 hours of video playback. However, Apple didn’t mention the wattage of the charger needed to achieve this speed during the livestream.

Next is the camera. The iPhone 18 Pro’s new 48-megapixel main camera debuts a variable aperture, which controls the amount of light entering the camera, thereby altering the depth-of-field effect:

Apple designed this system with six laser-cut blades, each thinner than a human hair, using a special polymer that balances weight, flexibility, and durability. The camera can automatically adjust the aperture based on the scene, increasing light intake by about 50% in low-light environments. The f/1.8 setting is specifically optimized by Apple to strike a balance between light intake and depth of field.

The iPhone 18 Pro series camera also adds new “Pro Controls,” allowing users to manually select from 4 aperture settings, as well as adjust white balance, shutter speed, and view the histogram. For example, changing the shutter speed can freeze fast action, or you can intentionally leave motion blur. Additionally, the 6 aperture blades can produce starburst effects in appropriate situations.

Effects like this can also be captured with the iPhone 18 Pro series:

For video, the new camera software can turn regular videos into Cinematic mode effects, and you can still make adjustments after shooting. It also now supports 60 frames per second. Time-lapse has been upgraded to 4K Dolby Vision HDR. The “Mix” feature uses an updated algorithm that not only improves vocal recording quality but also adds support for music content:

The iPhone 18 Pro series also features smart focus tracking, powered by on-device AI models that automatically lock onto moving subjects. Even if the subject moves back and forth, or briefly leaves the frame and returns, the camera will attempt to maintain focus.

As generative AI develops rapidly, it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish real images from fake ones, which is why Apple is building image verification into the camera. The iPhone 18 Pro series will support the SynthID standard to help identify whether images have been AI-generated or edited. Beyond that, on the capture side, the main camera will add security signatures to image data at the pixel level during the sensor stage, and then generate tamper-proof reference images through private cloud computing.

Apple also mentioned that Siri AI can now work with over 300,000 apps, including sending messages on WhatsApp, playing audiobooks on Audible, drafting emails in Outlook, searching for homework with Notability, and adding restaurant recommendations to Tripsy.

as well as other Apple Intelligence updates. These include Safari’s Notify Me, which continuously monitors webpage changes, Shortcuts for creating personal automations from text descriptions, and showing flight confirmation codes when calling businesses in the Phone app. Image Playground also adds more generation styles:

The “Cleanup” feature in the Photos app improves inpainting results for complex scenes, and there’s also “Spatial Reconstruction,” which extends the frame and lets you change the perspective after the shot.

Apple Intelligence will support 16 languages and roll out with this month’s iOS update. Siri AI will launch as a beta in English first, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish added in October. Some features that require server-side models will have usage limits, and most iCloud+ plans will get additional usage, though the event didn’t reveal the specific allowances for each plan.

AirDrop transfer speed also improved by 80%:

Finally, there is the rumored new “iPhone Relay” feature, which will allow two iPhones to share the same phone number, so you can use either one. However, initial carrier support is limited, including T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom, while Verizon and EE are expected to join by the end of this year.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will both be available for pre-order on September 12 at 8 PM, with sales starting September 18. Here are the Taiwan prices.

Upgrading to the latest iPhone 18 won’t make scams automatically disappear.

The security mechanisms of new iPhones get more complete every year, but nowadays many scams don’t directly attack the phone at all—instead, they try to get “you to click it yourself.”Fake Apple account alerts, insufficient iCloud storage, credit card payment failures, convenience store package redelivery… As long as you enter your account, password, or credit card information on a fraudulent website, even the newest phone can’t help you determine whether the other party is a scammer.

Besides your own phone, don’t forget about your parents at home who use iPhones and iPads. You can install “Trend Micro Mobile Security” for them to help filter suspicious text messages, check for malicious and scam URLs, and provide an extra layer of security confirmation when they encounter unfamiliar QR codes or suspicious links. You can upgrade to the latest phone, but your anti-fraud mindset needs to be upgraded too.
