A few days ago, the French radiation regulatory agency pointed out that the electromagnetic waves of the iPhone 12 exceeded the standard and banned the sale of the phone in France. This has attracted the attention of regulatory agencies in other countries and plans to join in re-inspection. Although APPLE refuted this accusation, in order to calm the dispute, Apple announced on its official website that it would fix concerns that iPhone 12 electromagnetic waves may exceed standards in iOS 17.1.

1. Why does the electromagnetic wave of iPhone 12 exceed the standard? The solution for iOS 17.1

The French radiation regulatory agency (L’Agence Nationale des Fréquences, ANFR) previously investigated the electromagnetic wave radiation of 141 mobile phones on the market and found that when testing the iPhone 12, it was found that the limb SAR value (electromagnetic power absorbed by the human body from the device) was 5.74 W/kg, which exceeded the limit and did not comply with EU regulations. Therefore, Apple is required to withdraw from the French market starting from September 12, 2023. However, since the iPhone 12 was launched, global sales have exceeded 116 million units, and it has passed electromagnetic wave inspections in various countries. Most of the SAR values ​​detected by monitoring units in various countries are less than 1 w/kg, which meets the EU standard of less than 2 w/kg.

 

Why did the French ANFR randomly test the body SAR value of iPhone 12 to exceed the standard?

The general SAR value test is the test specification of FCC and CE. The SAR test requires the use of liquid standardized human head and body models to simulate the RF absorption characteristics of different human tissues. SAR value detection units in various countries usually test the SAR standards of the head, body and limbs on mobile phones operating in the frequency range of 450 MHz to 6GHz. However, French ANFR tested the iPhone 12 and found that when the phone is removed from the body, the electromagnetic wave energy will exceed the EU standard. Only when the phone is placed in a coat pocket, next to the ear to answer calls, and is in a bag, the electromagnetic waves do not appear to be too strong.
Apple explained: “iPhone is equipped with a sensor that can detect whether the device is on a stationary surface (such as a table), rather than being held in the hand or in a pocket. All iPhones have adopted this away-from-body detection mechanism for more than ten years, allowing the device to slightly increase the transmission power when away from the body to achieve optimal performance.” “SAR value tests in various countries are in close contact with the human body, but ANFR tests based on the device being in a stationary state and away from the body, which does not comply with international standards.”

 

In other words, the iPhone has used its sensor to provide “away notification” since iOS15, and will increase the phone’s transmit power when the phone is away from the body to help users find their lost phone more easily. However, in order to comply with the requirements of the French ANFR, Apple decided to add in iOS 17.1 a feature for French users of the iPhone 12 to reduce the transmission power when stationary and away from the body. After updating to iOS 17.1, iPhone 12 will no longer increase the allowable power range when the phone sensor detects an away state (such as placing it on the table). This change to the antenna transmit power may result in a slight decrease in mobile network performance under certain away-from-the-body usage conditions, but most users should not notice these slight changes.

However, there are still some sporadic disasters in iOS 17.0.3.
