Although Gboard hasn’t yet joined the Google Play Store’s symbolic billion-download club, it’s still one of the most popular and full-featured keyboards in the Android ecosystem. However, for users who pursue efficient input and want to quickly edit text on their mobile phones, some of Gboard’s advanced features still require time to become familiar with, especially tools such as “sliding cursor control” that can increase typing speed.
Gboard is about to be upgraded, greatly improving the typing experience
The sliding cursor control itself is a very practical design. By sliding left and right on the blank key, the user can quickly move the insertion point and accurately locate the word that needs to be modified, eliminating the trouble of repeatedly clicking the screen. Currently Gboard provides two ways to move the cursor:
- Slide the space bar: Slide left or right to move the insertion point within the same line.
- Press the space bar to activate the virtual trackpad: a controllable virtual cursor will appear on the screen, allowing you to move the insertion point just like using a laptop trackpad.
The concept of this virtual trackpad isn’t entirely new, but its inclusion is significant for Gboard. When the virtual touchpad is activated, users can directly drag the cursor to any line without being limited to the “line by line” method. This is a very obvious efficiency improvement for those who need to modify long text, adjust paragraph structure, or quickly locate typos.
It is worth noting that this virtual trackpad operation method has already appeared on other keyboards. For example, SwiftKey (another favorite keyboard among Android users) has long supported the ability to activate trackpad mode by pressing and holding the space bar. SwiftKey’s trackpad allows users to move the cursor freely without line spacing restrictions. The operation logic is very similar to the function Gboard is preparing to launch. This also means that Google may have seen user needs and competitive product advantages and decided to add this functional puzzle.
However, there are still several unknowns.
