British netizens thought hard drives were too expensive, so they flew to the United States to buy 10 28TB ones and actually saved more than NT$60,000.
A cgtechuk netizen recently shared his story on the Reddit r/DataHoarder section about how he saved a lot of money by buying hard drives in the United States. The content states that he calls himself a “data hoarder” and will store a lot of digital content for a long time. He has purchased four 16TB hard drives from Amazon in the UK in 2020. Now he is running out of space, so he plans to upgrade the hard drive space. Then he observed the market price and found that 28TB hard drives in the UK were soaring. He felt it was too exaggerated, so he decided to take a short trip to New York after the New Year and buy some hard drives. Considering that the price is likely to continue to rise, he decided to buy 10 pieces at a time.
However, since Best Buy and B&H Photo have restrictions on single purchases (maximum 5), he bought 5 28TB hard drives from these two stores respectively, for a total of 10 hard drives, with a total capacity of 280TB. To ensure quality, he also videotaped the pickup process and tested each hard drive in the hotel room with diagnostic tools, such as Seatools, Crystal and file copy tests.

When returning, put the exposed hard drive in foam packaging and put it in your carry-on luggage. When passing through British Customs, you must declare and present the invoice and pay the 20% import value-added tax (VAT):

According to the figures he provided, buying a Seagate Expansion 28TB in the US converts to around £244 per unit, or around £300 after VAT. The same model retails for about £568 on Amazon UK, meaning a price difference of more than £200 per piece and a savings of about $3,700 for 10 pieces. After deducting travel expenses such as air tickets and cheap hotels near JFK, New York (paid in part with airline points), he ended up saving more than $2,000. He said in the post that the trip was “well worth it.”

Having said that, if it weren’t for his sharing, I really wouldn’t have known that the Seagate Expansion 28TB in the United States was so cheap. I checked that the PChome price in Taiwan is also NT$22,990, which is similar to that in the UK. It is really a big saving. It can be seen from this that if you are planning to buy computer hardware recently, you might as well go to the US website to compare prices first. You may be able to find a cheaper price and save travel expenses to the US.
