Apple Silicon has been delivering amazing results since M1. There is too much data to show that M1 and its current series of chips have the strongest processing performance on the planet. What is even more rare is that the energy efficiency performance is also first-class. Most models in the M1 series are used in its laptop lineup, with the exception of the M1 Ultra, which currently has the highest specs. At Apple’s recent press conference, M1 Ultra was launched together with its matching Mac Studio host and other products. The performance of M1 Ultra was described in the briefing as quite powerful, especially the GPU performance that has surpassed the most powerful products currently. However, this chart explanation is obviously a bit general. The main problem is that the RTX 3090 is no worse than the M1 Ultra when measured, which has aroused the topic of hardware players.

M1 Ultra is undoubtedly the greatest of Apple’s current self-produced chips. Not only is it great in terms of size, but it is also impressive in its ultra-high performance. Its appearance has overshadowed Intel. Even though Intel’s recent Alder Lake architecture has performed well and its upcoming Arc graphics card is highly anticipated, the powerful aura of the M1 Ultra still makes it impossible to ignore its existence.

From the previous M1, M1 Pro/Max to the recent M1 Ultra, we have known that Apple has long planned to stack this architecture to produce amazing value. M1 itself is excellent and its energy efficiency performance is difficult to surpass. M1 Pro/Max and even the latest M1 Ultra, which are stacked on this chip, naturally have no doubts about its performance. Just sit back and watch as Apple perfects its Apple Slilcon tricks so well that pro users can’t help but cash in on them.

However, many people often mention the GPU performance of the M1 series. The greatest self-made chip architecture in Apple’s history has a GPU performance that is not inferior to ordinary independent graphics cards. If Apple computers were not very popular with professional players, perhaps Apple would be the only leader in e-sports notebooks today. Since M1 Ultra has so many cores stacked up, it is theoretically not too controversial to have incredible GPU performance.

However, this is where the controversy arises.

At the press conference, Apple used a hyperbolic chart as usual to compare the performance and power consumption of the M1 Ultra chip with the current highest-end GPU. It is claimed that the M1 Ultra chip is really powerful in GPU performance, but this result is obviously curious. After all, it is not difficult to verify the capabilities of M1 Ultra and other GPUs, but the difference in the system affects the performance more or less. And since it mentions the highest level, in other words, it refers to the RTX 3090, the strongest and fastest single card king currently on PC. Since M1 Ultra dares to claim that it is faster than RTX 3090, naturally some people will overcome all difficulties to verify it.

However, there are not many software that can compare hardware performance across platform barriers. foreign media The Verge We chose the Compute benchmark in Geekbench 5 and the game “Shadow of the Tomb Raider” available on both Mac and PC for comparison. To be precise, since PC only supports OpenCL and does not support Apple’s unique Metal API, although Geekbench 5 includes the Metal API benchmark, the comparison object is mainly based on the OpenCL score.

The running score results are somewhat surprising. M1 Studio is completely defeated in games. Neither the M1 Ultra version nor the M1 Max version can beat the RTX 3090 graphics card on PC. The Geekbench results are also unflattering. The RTX 3090 is far ahead and is in a situation where it has released its opponents.

However, for Apple, losing games and Geekbench is not the worst thing. In fact they don’t need to advertise this performance at all. The original customer base of Mac Studio is professional users. Professionals who rely on Mac for a living do not need to care whether it really beats the RTX 3090. The author believes that Apple hopes to use exaggeration to arouse people’s attention to the super performance of M1 Ultra, and looks forward to the possibility that they will launch a new chip called M2. But the exaggeration of the chart ultimately fails to withstand scrutiny.

For PC players, the biggest comfort now is that they don’t have to be criticized by Apple users: “The computers I bought to make money by editing videos are faster than your RTX 3090.” If you want to build the ultimate gaming computer, RTX 3090 is faster and better.
