Google launched AI Overviews in the US in May this year, and while reviews are still mixed so far, it hasn’t slowed down. After expanding to other countries in August, Google announced earlier that more countries will be able to use it starting this week, and this time it’s adding more than 100 countries at once, including Taiwan, as long as they meet the requirements.
Starting this week, Google AI Overviews will also be available in Taiwan, but only for supported languages and specific search results.

However, note that although it has expanded to more countries, not all languages are supported. Apart from English, which was already available, the currently supported languages include Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. This means you must use these languages to “possibly” get AI Overviews results. Chinese is not supported yet:
Why did we say “possibly” earlier? Because at this stage, it seems not every search result gets AI Overviews—some support it, some don’t.
As for when Traditional Chinese support will be added, I’d guess it shouldn’t be too long. After all, AI Overviews has already rolled out to over 100 countries, so if you want to try it but find English too difficult, just hang tight—who knows, it might be available before the end of the year.
Google has also recently added a feature to save AI Overviews, making it easy for users to keep past AI Overviews records.
Although the media and users have given moderately positive reviews of AI Overviews so far, Google doesn’t seem to think that’s enough. In the article, it states: “Since launching in May and expanding globally in August, the feedback we’ve received shows that the AI Overviews feature has been well received. Users are more inclined to use AI Overviews alongside search and find these results more helpful.” It now also has 1 billion global users per month.
How do AI Overviews work?
According to Google’s documentation, AI Overviews works using generative AI, just like Perplexity — the AI directly reads the content of the best search results and summarizes it to help users save more time on searching.
However, AI search is still under development, so no matter which AI search service it is, they all specifically note that “may generate inaccurate or offensive information,” and Google is no exception. InHelp pageIt was mentioned that “AI Overviews will inevitably make mistakes.”
Google also advises users to think critically about AI Overviews responses and verify important information themselves from multiple sources.
Can the AI Overviews feature be turned off?
At the moment, Google doesn’t seem to offer an official way to disable it, but if you’re using desktop Chrome, you can use extensions to do it—just search the Google Store and you’ll find quite a few.
