Physical discs are about to become a thing of the past! Sony confirms it will stop producing new PlayStation game discs, Xbox reportedly set to follow

Although digital games have been incredibly convenient in recent years, letting players download new titles without leaving home, many gamers still love the tangible experience of physical copies—something you can see, touch, and put on a shelf to admire. However, in just a few more years, physical game discs will likely fade from the mainstream market, becoming a relic of the past.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has already PlayStation Blog announcedStarting January 2028, all new games released on PlayStation consoles will cease physical disc production, with new titles only available through the PlayStation Store and digital distribution via retail channels. Following this news, there were also reports that Xbox appears to be following suit.

Starting in 2028, PlayStation’s new titles will fully shift to digital, and the Xbox next-generation console is also rumored to follow suit

Sony mentioned in the announcement that the reason for this change is that consumer preferences and the entire entertainment industry have been steadily shifting from physical discs to digital content. As such, PlayStation games released after January 2028 will only be available in digital format, which players can purchase through the PlayStation Store or obtain via digital versions sold by retailers.

You can also rest assured that your physical PS4 and PS5 discs will continue to work. Sony has specifically stated that this transition won’t affect games that have already been released, nor will it affect physical disc versions of games released before January 2028.

In other words, existing games and physical versions that have already been scheduled for release are not included in the scope of this announcement.

According to Sony’s data, this change actually follows a discernible pattern.

Sony’s FY2025 Q4 supplementary data shows that PS4/PS5 game digital downloads for the full year have reached 78%, with Q4 alone hitting 85%. In the same data, FY2025 physical software revenue was approximately 125.1 billion yen, while full-game digital download revenue came to approximately 1.0556 trillion yen, with add-on content revenue reaching approximately 1.3596 trillion yen.

The bulk of revenue and growth actually comes from digital stores, downloadable content, subscription services, and account ecosystems.

On the Xbox side, Microsoft already unveiled “Project Helix” this past March—this is the development codename for the next-generation Xbox console. Foreign media Windows Central previously reported thatProject Helix appears increasingly likely to move toward systems without built-in optical drives, which would also mean the next-generation Xbox may not include a built-in optical drive. Of course, this is still just speculation at this point.

The Verge reportsIt also points out that Microsoft is internally testing a disc-to-digital feature that allows players to convert Xbox One and Xbox Series X physical discs into digital licenses. This license will be bound to the specific disc and Microsoft account, and after players insert a compatible disc, install and launch the game, they will obtain the corresponding digital rights.

Additionally, the Xbox Series S is a disc-less design, and the Xbox Series X also has a disc-less digital edition. All signs indicate that Xbox is slowly moving toward a more digital direction.
