It’s unexpected—Microsoft actually tried to build an AI operating system this early. Foreign media outlet Windows Latest recently reported that a Microsoft internal concept video from 2024 or earlier has surfaced, showcasing a “Copilot OS” codenamed Project Aion. Unlike the Windows 11 we’re familiar with, it removes classic elements such as the Start menu, traditional desktop icons, and Task View—the entire system is almost entirely centered around Copilot, with most operations completed through the search box.

Project Aion was set to turn Copilot into a system gateway, but will likely never officially launch
from Windows Latest Based on the leaked videos and screenshots, the biggest difference with Project Aion is that it has essentially redesigned the traditional Windows interaction paradigm. The Start menu familiar to Windows users is gone, traditional desktop icons are nowhere to be found on the desktop, the taskbar bears a closer resemblance to ChromeOS, and the core entry point has been changed to a Copilot Launcher.
You can think of it this way: in the past, we would first open the Start menu, then look for apps, files, or settings. This Copilot OS is designed to have users first tell the system what they want to do through natural language, and then let AI guide them through the rest of the process.
In the video, you can see an “Ask me anything” input box, which isn’t just for chatting with Copilot—it can also directly open websites, search for apps, and launch tasks. Windows Latest reports that Project Aion is an operating system built around Microsoft Edge, heavily relying on web technologies and web apps, rather than being primarily centered around local applications and Start menu navigation like traditional Windows.

Windows Latest reports that behind this is an engine called Silverstone, which is designed to break away from the traditional “App-centric” organization method and instead organize different apps, webpages, and tasks based on the user’s “goals.”
In other words, instead of having to open Word, then Edge, and manually organize everything yourself, you simply tell the system what you want to accomplish. Copilot then determines which tools, data, or web content are needed and helps arrange the next steps for you.
This design is actually quite close to the current concept of AI agents: users don’t need to figure out which app to open first—they simply state their goal, and the AI takes care of the rest.
When you want to open To Do, just open the Copilot launcher and type “to do” — the AI will automatically open the To Do web app:

Project Aion also appears to be clearly geared toward enterprise use cases. Windows Latest mentions that after users enter questions in the search box, the system will determine based on the content whether to route them to the consumer version of Copilot or the enterprise version of Copilot that handles work data.
If you type “/”, it can also trigger Context IQ, which directly connects to Microsoft 365 data, allowing users to mention colleagues or files in their prompts:

This means Project Aion goes beyond answering general web questions—it’s designed to help Copilot understand the work context, such as finding relevant content from SharePoint files, emails, or Microsoft 365 data, and then assist users with organizing project progress, checking meeting schedules, or even drafting emails directly.
Like Copilot, Copilot OS also supports interactive plugins that can generate actionable interactive interfaces directly within conversations.

For example, when a user requests to send a summary, instead of just generating an email draft, the system opens a mail composition window directly. Users don’t need to open Outlook or any other mail app separately—they can complete sending the email within the chat interface.

This represents Microsoft’s vision for Copilot OS at the time — not merely placing an AI chat window on the desktop, but integrating chat, search, app operations, and workflows into a single interface.
However, it’s worth noting that Microsoft has neither publicly confirmed Project Aion nor officially announced its cancellation.
Windows Latest believes this Copilot OS has likely been canceled, or at least temporarily shelved, as Microsoft recently appears more focused on bringing the focus back to Windows 11’s basic experience, quality, and performance, rather than directly launching an AI operating system that’s completely different from the existing Windows.
