When everything goes digital, who owns it? GitHub roasted the entire gaming industry with a CD-ROM

Sony officially announced on July 1 that starting January 2028, all new games released for PlayStation consoles will cease physical disc production, fully transitioning to digital distribution. While this decision sent shockwaves through the gaming community, it also ignited the debate over “whether we actually own what we buy in the digital age.” Seizing the moment, GitHub launched a deeply ironic campaign the very next day: letting you burn your code onto CD-ROMs and have them mailed straight to your doorstep.

Sony announces: The optical disc era officially comes to an end

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced this major decision in a very brief post on its official blog: as consumer preferences continue shifting from physical discs to digital content, all newly released PlayStation games will stop receiving physical disc production starting January 2028, with digital versions available exclusively through the PlayStation Store and retailers. Sony backed this decision with data: according to Q4 FY2025 reports, digital downloads accounted for 85% of full game sales on PS4 and PS5 platforms, while physical discs made up only 15%. Gaming retail giant GameStop has closed more than 1,300 stores over the past two fiscal years, making the decline of physical retail painfully evident.

Sony also announced the closure of PlayStation Store services for PS3 and PS VitaWill be gradually shut down in the futureThis means that once these stores go offline, players will no longer be able to purchase new digital content. While already-purchased games can still be downloaded for the time being, the long-term access rights remain under Sony’s control.

GTA 6 Controversy: Even the Physical Edition Is Fake

The timing of Sony’s announcement happened to coincide with another major discussion in the gaming community. Rockstar’s upcoming GTA 6 “physical edition” was discovered by players to contain only a download code inside the box, with no actual disc. This left players who were looking forward to owning a physical copy deeply disappointed, with many stating that this isn’t really a “physical edition” at all—just a “digital edition with a box.”

The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) immediately issued a statement, calling on the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) to propose “meaningful solutions” for the legal preservation of purely digital games. VGHF pointed out that the ESA has long opposed reforming digital copyright protection regulations, resulting in numerous games permanently disappearing after digital stores close, and that “downloading alone is not the way to preserve games.”

GitHub’s perfect roast: CD-ROM your code

Less than 24 hours after Sony’s announcement, GitHub posted a formally worded but obviously sarcastic announcement on X:

“We’ve heard your feedback, and we feel the same. In light of recent developments in physical media, GitHub is proud to announce that you can now get your public repos on CD-ROM. Collect it, lend it to friends, or pass it down to your descendants. Your code will be physically yours, forever. Honestly, unless you lose it.”

We heard you. And we agree.

In light of recent developments in physical media, GitHub is proud to announce that you can now obtain your public repo on CD-ROM.

Keep it. Lend it to friends. Pass it on to your children.

The link `gh.io/cd` in this tweet leads to a real Microsoft Forms form titled “GitHub Presents Your Code, On a CD,” which requires you to fill in your GitHub username, public repo URL, mailing address, and phone number. Applications are accepted only from July 2 to July 6—a total of four days—on a first-come, first-served basis, limited to the first 1,000 applicants, with one CD per person.

In other words, it’s a joke, but it’s also true—GitHub will actually burn a CD and mail it to you. On X, this tweet racked up over a million views within hours, with responses split into two camps: one found it genuinely funny, while the other used it to point out GitHub’s own reliability issues. Developer Robert Hurst called it a waste of time and a PR stunt, noting that GitHub logged 257 incidents and 48 major outages over the past year, giving it no room to mock anyone else.

Not just PlayStation: Microsoft Xbox is also considering going disc-less

Sony isn’t the only console maker moving toward full digitalization. Reports suggest Microsoft’s own Xbox division is also considering dropping disc drives entirely from the next generation console. In other words, Microsoft—the parent company of GitHub that mocked Sony—is now going down the same path with its own gaming division.

Other brands have also joined in on the parody wave. Domino’s UK and KFC Spain respectively released fake announcements for a “Pure Digital Pizza” and “Pure Digital Chicken,” riding the viral buzz from Sony’s recent controversy.

The Price of Digital Convenience: What You Buy, the Company Decides

The core issue of this controversy is actually pretty simple: once physical discs are gone, do the games you “bought” on the PlayStation Store actually belong to you? The answer is probably unsettling. Digital store shutdowns, licensing changes, platforms going under – these aren’t hypothetical problems. Sony closing the PS3 and PS Vita stores is a perfect example.

CD-Rs have a lifespan of roughly 10 to 30 years, so they don’t qualify as “permanent storage,” but at least they won’t vanish due to a company’s quarterly earnings pressure or a server migration. Windows Latest’s review put it well: “Physical media never truly went away, not because people miss CD binders, but because a disc sitting on a shelf doesn’t care what the company’s board of directors decides.”

This is also why the GitHub joke resonated so widely—it not only mocked Sony’s decision but also touched on consumers’ anxiety about digital ownership. When people spend real money on game software only to find that they don’t really “own” it in the end, and when the promise of cloud storage can be undermined by platform shutdowns or licensing changes, the anxiety over whether games should have “physical editions” feels especially real. This may be what Hideo Kojima was getting at back in 2021:

Even if something becomes data, the true ownership doesn’t rest with you. Just imagine—if the world, a nation, a government, or even an idea causes a major accident or disaster, these digitized things could simply vanish.

“At that time, the idea that we may no longer be able to freely enjoy these beloved films, books, and music we cherish… this concern doesn’t stem from greed, but rather from a deep sense of worry and fear.”

Eventually, even digital data will no longer be owned by individuals on their own initiative. Whenever there is a major change or accident in the world, in a country, in a government, in an idea, in a trend, access to it may suddenly be cut off.

But ironically, Kojima’s prophecy seems to be about to come true, but there’s not much we can do…
