How unlucky! Steam Machine player just used it for 20 minutes and the RLOD (Red Line of Death) appeared.

Valve’s Steam Machine has only just started shipping, but already there’s an awkward case making the rounds. According to reports from overseas gamers, their Steam Machine only ran properly for about 20 minutes before the front LED strip lit up red, and then the machine couldn’t boot up properly. It’s suspected the GPU graphics card might be the culprit. Just bad luck, really — all set to happily play some games, and then this happens.

Steam Machine Early Adopters Encounter Red Line of Death: System Fails to Boot After Just 20 Minutes, Official Indicator Points to GPU Error

A Reddit user from abroad going by me_hill recently shared on the r/steammachine subreddit that their Steam Machine, after just 20 minutes of use — roughly 5 minutes of playing No Man’s Sky — followed by installing a system-provided update, could no longer boot normally, with the front light bar displaying a red error state.

Well, the Steam Machine was pretty cool for the 20 minutes that it worked

The Steam Machine’s front light bar isn’t just for RGB decoration. Under normal conditions, a white breathing light indicates it’s booting up, solid blue means the system has finished starting up, and blue progressing from left to right means it’s downloading. Red light indicates an error state. The official Valve support page advises that if you see these error light patterns, you should open a support ticket in Steam Support and describe which error mode your machine is displaying.

For example: if the CPU temperature exceeds 95°C or the GPU exceeds 90°C, a solid red light across the entire strip indicates overheating. A red breathing light in the fourth quadrant indicates the system cannot detect RAM. A red breathing light in the second quadrant indicates no SSD detected. A red breathing light on the left half indicates memory training failure.

Based on the photo of this machine, the LED indicator appears to show a breathing red light on the right side, combined with a red status indicator. According to the official LED documentation, this indicator pattern represents “System detects a GPU failure,” meaning the system has detected a GPU abnormality.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean the GPU has hardware damage, but the indicator light at least points to a GPU-related issue. In Reddit threads, some people have also speculated it could be related to firmware, drivers, or post-update detection errors. However, these are still just community guesses.

me_hill later also replied that they would contact Steam Support, though no updates on the outcome yet. From some users’ experiences in the discussion thread, Valve’s RMA initial communication can sometimes be a bit rough, and a user named _d3uc3_ mentioned:

Regardless, this still appears to be isolated cases at the moment, and can’t really be called a widespread issue yet, so players who have ordered or are looking to get a Steam Machine don’t need to worry too much.
