ChatGPT Deep Research has become one of the most popular features among users, helping us generate more comprehensive reports—a highly useful and efficient way to research information. And starting today, Deep Research has become even more powerful!
Earlier OpenAI Announcing an upgrade to ChatGPT’s Deep Research feature, which now includes the GPT-5.2 model and a new capability allowing users to specify which websites and applications to search. Even better, you can now supplement ChatGPT with additional information at any point during its research process.
ChatGPT gives Deep Research a major upgrade — here are the new changes
ChatGPT’s Deep Research feature helps users conduct deeper, multi-step research tasks. It automatically searches the web, analyzes information, and generates comprehensive reports with cited sources. As a result, it takes longer to research compared to regular chat conversations.
In general, depending on the complexity of the research task, in-depth research typically takes 5 to 30 minutes to complete.
During this process, previously, if you thought of something you hadn’t supplemented, you could only wait for the in-depth research to complete before adding it. Otherwise, you’d have to open a new chat and request new in-depth research, which was quite cumbersome.
As OpenAI upgrades ChatGPT’s deep research capabilities, there will now be an updated feature in the top-right corner when conducting research, allowing you to add more requests anytime, or pause and redirect the direction, among other things:
When submitting content for deeper research, instead of asking follow-up questions like before, it now shows a bulleted list of the topics it will analyze. You can press edit to add anything, or start directly if everything looks good:

If you don’t want to search the entire web like before, there’s now an option to limit the search scope, including apps and websites. This means you can specify ChatGPT’s research sources, giving you better control over data quality.
Although searching the entire web can yield more comprehensive information, this can still happen sometimes because unreliable sources compromise the accuracy of reports.

Finally, the “Deep Research” feature is now officially powered by the latest GPT-5.2 model, capable of generating higher quality research reports. However, it’s important to note that depending on the subscription plan, the model used for Deep Research and the available quotas will vary. For instance, the lightweight version of Deep Research is powered by the o4-mini model, offering lower costs and higher efficiency.
