In recent years, smartphone design has gradually matured, and various brands have begun to try to use “extreme specifications” to create new topics, among which “ultra-thin body” has once again become the focus. Just when the outside world thought that only a few brands were left to continue trying on this road, a Xiaomi prototype that had never been officially unveiled quietly surfaced.
This device is rumored to be based on the Xiaomi 17 Air. It features a body thickness control that far exceeds that of mainstream flagships. It is even thinner than the iPhone Air. From the appearance design to the hardware configuration, this prototype is actually quite close to mass production level, but in the end it did not make it to the market.

Canceled Xiaomi Xiaomi 17 Air thin and light flagship prototype exposed
After the smartphone market has entered a plateau, it is difficult for consumers to feel clearly through performance improvements alone, so “appearance differentiation” has once again become a direction for brands to try to break through. Ultra-thin design is one of those routes that looks eye-catching but is also full of risks. Previous supply chain news pointed out that many Chinese mobile phone brands have chosen to suspend the development plans for thin and light flagships after assessing market reaction, and Xiaomi is one of them.
Recently, the whistleblower Panda Jibalan released a video on Weibo, allowing the rumored Xiaomi Xiaomi 17 Air prototype to be fully seen for the first time. What is shown in the video is the exposed fuselage structure, but the overall design direction can be clearly seen. The back of the machine is made of matte glass, which is visually low-key and delicate, while the camera module extending laterally at the rear is deliberately made of shiny metal texture, forming a clear contrast, and the overall style is quite recognizable.

Judging from the size, this prototype is equipped with a display screen of about 6.59 inches, which is relatively large in the mainstream of current flagship mobile phones, but what is really surprising is the thickness of the body.
According to breaking news, Xiaomi 17 Air is only 5.5mm thick, which is even 0.1mm thinner than the iPhone Air, which was focused on thinness and lightness at the time. Putting such a number on the actual feel means that it is almost approaching the limits of structure and durability.

Another tipster familiar with supply chain trends, Digital Chat Station, also added more specification details. Xiaomi 17 Air was originally planned to be equipped with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, which is one of the top flagship platforms of the times. It shows that this is not a display machine that sacrifices performance for the sake of style. At the same time, it is expected to be equipped with a battery capacity of less than 6000mAh and a main lens of up to 200MP. The specifications still maintain Xiaomi’s consistent stacking style.
However, it is these stacks of specifications that make ultra-thin design more difficult. When the thickness of the body is compressed to 5.5mm, the heat dissipation space, battery structure, lens module height, and even body strength must be re-selected.
In order to maintain endurance performance, the battery must adopt a higher cost or more radical solution, and the coexistence of high-pixel photosensitive elements and flagship chips will also put great pressure on the heat dissipation design.
From a market perspective, although ultra-thin mobile phones are very topical, the actual sales performance of iPhone Air is often not as good as expected.
When most consumers choose a mobile phone, they still care more about battery life, camera stability and overall durability, rather than simply pursuing extreme thickness. When a product must make significant compromises in cost and practicality, brands will naturally re-evaluate whether it is worth mass production.
In the end, the Xiaomi 17 Air stayed in the prototype stage and became a device that only existed in leaked videos and specifications rumors. Its appearance is more like a technology demonstration, proving Xiaomi’s ability to make mobile phones so thin, but it also clearly shows that such a design is still difficult to achieve a balance between market and cost at this stage.
