However, the company has since changed its mind, as Windows 11 SE will be officially retired in 2026 and will no longer receive updates.
Windows 11 SE, once seen as a competitor to Chrome OS, will be phased out in 2026
Microsoft has long been trying to create a streamlined—or “simplified”—version of its operating system under the Windows brand. Windows 11 SE isn’t the company’s first attempt to take on ChromeOS; nearly 10 years ago, Microsoft launched Windows 10 S Mode. Windows 11 SE is the successor to Windows 10 S Mode. Microsoft states that the development of this operating system was driven by feedback from educators, with the goal of creating a system that is “simpler, more secure, and capable of running on more affordable devices.”
But how does Windows 11 SE differ from Windows 11? First, it was intended to be a web-first operating system; Microsoft designed it to run only a select set of approved applications, primarily for educational purposes. It can run traditional Windows applications (.exe), but only if the school or IT administrator permits it. If a student attempts to install or run an unapproved Win32.exe file, the operation will fail. Microsoft has made it clear that Win32 applications that cannot be executed—even if they are technically supported—cannot be installed or run on Windows 11 SE.
Microsoft says Windows 11 SE is the best choice for education users looking for cost-effective devices, The company is also selling the Surface Laptop SE for just $249, and OEM partners, including Dell and HP, have joined in to begin building more affordable computers running Windows 11 SE. However, only certified U.S. K-8 schools are permitted to purchase these devices.
