Recently Intel and AMD It’s safe to say the war of words has been particularly intense! Intel Executive Tom Petersen Questions the Efficiency of AMD’s iGPU and Confirms No Plans to Compete with Strix Halo
During the Panther Lake launch event, Intel compared its flagship Core Ultra X9 388H (featuring an Arc B390 iGPU with 12 Xe3 graphics cores) to the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (based on the Strix Point architecture), claiming that in terms of gaming performance, the Core Ultra X9 388H is 73% faster (native rendering) to 82% faster (with XeSS upscaling technology) than the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370.
AMD, however, considers this to be “unfair.”
Although the Strix Halo features a more powerful iGPU, systems equipped with Core Ultra X9 and X7 processors are also expected to be priced in the higher range, placing them in a market segment quite similar to that targeted by AMD Ryzen AI Max+.

Judging by Tom Petersen’s response, Intel still doesn’t seem to think so.
Tom Petersen pointed out that the Strix Halo is closer to a “quasi-discrete graphics card-level” product than a typical mainstream iGPU design, so he feels it would be more suitable for third-party manufacturers to release compact discrete graphics cards based on it, rather than for Intel to develop one itself.
In other words, Intel has no immediate plans to release a product comparable to the Strix Halo.
Around the middle of last year, a leak mentioned that Intel had a project called Nova Lake-AX, whose powerful iGPU was said to rival the Strix Halo; this suggests that the project has likely been canceled,
In addition, Tom Petersen pointed out that Intel’s strategy is to focus on more efficient integrated graphics solutions rather than pursuing high-power, massive APUs. He believes that AMD’s iGPUs do not perform well in balancing power consumption and performance, particularly in terms of battery life and thermal management.
