ChatGPT launches personal finance feature that can connect to bank accounts, letting AI help analyze your financial situation

Many people hope to improve their financial situation—whether that’s cutting unnecessary expenses, tracking where their money goes each month, or saving up for a down payment on a house. While you could ask AI about these things before, the process was a bit tedious. You’d have to copy and paste bank statements, credit card transactions, and investment records, or export them as PDFs, CSVs, and so on. Without the full picture, AI’s advice sometimes fell short.

Addressing this pain point, OpenAI recently launched a ChatGPT Personal Finance preview, enabling ChatGPT to directly link to your bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts, consolidating data scattered across various banks into a single financial dashboard. Now when you have questions, the AI already knows where your money is going and what your investment portfolio looks like, allowing it to provide answers more tailored to your actual situation.

ChatGPT Launches Personal Finance Feature: Connect Directly to Your Bank Account, Automatically Analyze Spending, Subscriptions, and Investment Portfolio

ChatGPT’s new personal finance feature essentially lets you connect your bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts to ChatGPT, so you can ask financial questions in natural language directly—no more manually organizing Excel sheets or exporting statements for AI to read.

A preview for Pro users: a new personal finance experience in ChatGPT.

Pro users in the U.S. can securely connect financial accounts, see where their money is going, and ask questions based on the information they choose to connect.

Using it is simple: find the new “Finances” option in the ChatGPT sidebar and click it to start linking. You can also type “@Finances, connect my accounts” in any chat, and ChatGPT will guide you through Plaid’s verification process. Many people may not know this, but Plaid is a common financial data integration service in the US, and many financial services and personal finance apps use it to connect with banks and other financial institutions.

After completing authentication, ChatGPT will take a few minutes to sync and categorize your data, then you’ll see the Financial Dashboard.

The Financial Dashboard shows where your money goes, your subscription list, upcoming bills, and charts of your portfolio performance—all data is synced from financial institutions to ensure the most current financial picture. Then you can start asking ChatGPT all kinds of financial questions.

OpenAI also gives examples; you can ask:

  • Seems like we’ve been spending a bit more lately, is something going on?

  • How much did you spend in total for this recent vacation?
  • Should I accept a job that pays less but lets me spend more time with my kids?
  • What is the biggest risk in my portfolio?
  • Help me review my subscription list and suggest which ones I can cancel.

The underlying model is GPT-5.5 Thinking. OpenAI says financial questions highly depend on context and reasoning capabilities, so they established an internal personal finance benchmark and partnered with over 50 finance professionals to evaluate this experience, continuously assessing and optimizing ChatGPT’s performance on these types of questions.

For security purposes, you can remove the connection for any account at any time through Settings → Apps → Finances. Once disconnected, any data synced from ChatGPT will be cleared within 30 days. You can also view and individually delete ChatGPT’s financial memories from the Finances page.

In terms of permissions, ChatGPT can see your balance, transaction details, investment information, debts, and more, but it cannot see your full account numbers, nor can it make any changes or transactions to your account. In other words, it won’t help you transfer money or place orders—it’s purely reading data for analysis. OpenAI also noted that when using ChatGPT’s “Temporary Chat,” it won’t access data from connected financial accounts.

As for which banks are supported, OpenAI mentions that over 12,000 financial institutions can be connected through Plaid, with major support for the likes of Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, Capital One, and similar institutions — basically all the major U.S. banks, brokerages, and credit cards.

By this point, you’ve probably guessed that the ChatGPT personal finance feature is currently only available in the US and limited to ChatGPT Pro users. OpenAI says it will first observe Pro users’ feedback and refine the product before rolling it out to Plus users, but hasn’t provided a specific timeline.

When will other countries (including Taiwan) get it too? There’s been no disclosure on that.
