Microsoft is deprecating 3D Viewer, and the app will be removed from the store on 7/1

Have you ever actively opened the 3D Viewer in Windows? If not, you’re not alone. For many users, this tool almost never really becomes part of the daily workflow, and even if they occasionally need to view 3D models, most people will choose third-party tools with more complete functions and higher compatibility. Frankly speaking, this is the same for me. From the days of Windows 10 to now, I have almost never deliberately started it.

Microsoft is deprecating 3D Viewer, and the app will be removed from the store on 7/1

It seems that Microsoft is also aware of this phenomenon. Recently, it officially announced that 3D Viewer will be deprecated. This decision is not surprising. After all, the presence of this application has not been high, and Windows’ product strategy in recent years has gradually shifted from “built-in large number of creative tools” to “streamlining the system and focusing on core functions.”

However, if you happen to be a loyal user of 3D Viewer, don’t worry too much. Microsoft’s announcement did not say that the app would be forcibly removed from all computers, but that it would be removed from the Microsoft Store on July 1, 2026. In other words, as long as you have it installed, it will still continue to work, you just won’t receive future updates and won’t be able to re-download it.

To understand this decision, you have to go back to the Windows 10 Creators Update in 2017. This was a period when Microsoft was vigorously promoting “everyone is a creator”. At that time, Windows had a variety of built-in tools related to 3D, drawing, and mixed reality, trying to create an ecosystem that would allow ordinary users to easily create. In that wave of updates, the 3D Viewer (then called Mixed Reality Viewer) debuted alongside Paint 3D. They symbolize Microsoft’s vision for 3D creation: allowing more people to create, edit, and view 3D models on Windows, and even use them with mixed reality devices. However, over time, the usage of these tools did not grow as expected, Paint 3D had been officially phased out the previous year, and 3D Viewer finally met the same fate.

According to Microsoft’s latest Windows feature update notes, the status of 3D Viewer has been marked as “deprecated.” The announcement states:
3D Viewer has been deprecated and will be removed from the Microsoft Store on July 1, 2026. When viewing 3D content, you can use the Babylon.js Sandbox. This passage reveals two things:

  • 3D Viewer won’t disappear immediately
The installed version can still be used, but no updates or technical support will be provided in the future.
  • Microsoft offers alternatives
The official recommendation is to use Babylon.js Sandbox, a web-based, cross-platform 3D model viewing tool. This also reflects Microsoft’s emphasis on web technology and its gradual shift of some functions from native applications to the cloud and browser.

The demise of 3D Viewer symbolizes a shift in Windows product strategy. From emphasizing “built-in diverse creative tools” in the past to now focusing more on system performance, AI integration and cloud services, Microsoft is gradually handing over creative tools to a more professional and diverse third-party ecosystem. For most users, this is a reasonable evolution; for the few who still miss the 3D Viewer, it will at least be with you for a while.
