Sony recently launched a new “console trade-in offer” for PlayStation 5 players in North America. Players who return their PS5 console and two controllers can receive up to US$400 (approximately NT$13,000) in cash.

As of now, Sony has officially introduced this promotion directly to users through the PlayStation mobile app. In addition to offering console trade-in credit, it even lets players choose to have this rebate deposited directly into their bank account, rather than only being able to redeem it for PlayStation Store credit or gift cards.

Sony’s current-generation console, the PlayStation 5, first officially launched in November 2020, with both a “Standard Edition” and a “Digital Edition” released at the same time. At the time, their prices were $399.99 and $499.99, respectively. The Digital Edition was priced at $399.99, while the Standard Edition with a disc drive was $499.99. After that, Sony also successively launched two new versions: the lighter PS5 Slim and the fully performance-enhanced PS5 Pro. Even so, the Standard Edition PS5 has not only failed to gradually drop in price over the years, but has even seen its price raised because of rising prices for memory raw materials.
According to ResetEra forum users Jay_Horror According to a share, Sony has recently begun promoting this new program through notifications, stating that any eligible player who returns a fully functional “standard PS5 console and two controllers” can receive up to $400 in trade-in credit. However, for now, the program is limited to the version that includes a disc drive, and regardless of the color scheme of the console or controllers, the trade-in conditions do not differ much. As for the specific eligibility and complete program rules, further confirmation is still pending.

At current market prices, this offer is indeed quite attractive to many players. After the recent price increases, the standard PS5 console is priced between $600 and $650, while the high-performance PS5 Pro has risen to $900. At the same time, the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6 will also officially launch this month, so demand for PS5 consoles is bound to reach a new high—even the resale price of used PS5 Pro consoles has soared to $1,400.
However, Sony has not yet officially explained publicly why it is holding this event, but many players believe Sony may be hoping to use it to increase its inventory of official pre-owned consoles and adjust prices around the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6; at the same time, another possibility is that it is encouraging existing standard PS5 console owners to replace their consoles.

Regardless of Sony’s true intentions, for players who bought a PS5 before the recent price increase, this offer undoubtedly provides a fairly rare trade-in opportunity, and may even let them recover all the money they spent on the console at the time. Of course, this offer will not necessarily appeal to everyone, especially those who are still regularly playing their PS5 and are starting to prepare for playing Grand Theft Auto 6. Therefore, unless you are someone who no longer has any need to keep playing, or plans to put in additional money to upgrade to a PS5 Pro, simply handing back a fully functional PS5 may not be the most cost-effective choice.
In addition, through this official buyback program, Sony not only has an opportunity to further expand its positioning in the second-hand market, but can also gain a better understanding of players’ demand for upgrades and console replacements. If this program ultimately receives positive feedback from players, similar official console buyback offers may become a new normal in the game console industry in the future.
