Just this July, the YouTube channel Atlas Arcade took a creative, out-of-the-box approach by using YouTube’s VR video format to turn《Mario KartOnce it was brought to this video platform, it allowed players to simulate gameplay by controlling the view with left and right inputs. The creative idea sparked heated discussion among fans at the time and surpassed 2 million views. Now, another creator has used a similar approach to bring Nintendo’s classic 3D platform adventure game Super Mario 64 to YouTube.

Originally released on the N64 in 1996, Super Mario 64 is considered a classic masterpiece that established 3D platforming adventure, and it still holds an irreplaceable place in the hearts of many fans to this day. It also laid the groundwork for later Nintendo titles such as Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Odyssey. Recently, content creator Rovertronic has also turned this timeless platformer into a brand-new YouTube interactive video that fans can experience firsthand.
On August 14, Rovertronic uploaded an interactive video to YouTube claiming to allow direct play of Super Mario 64. Similar to Atlas Arcade’s creation, he styled the video’s subtitles to resemble the Mario character, allowing players to interact through the viewing angle of the VR video.

At the beginning of this video, fans can “operate” Mario to select levels in Peach’s Castle from the opening of Super Mario 64, then head to the game’s first level, “Bob-omb Battlefield.” After clearing this classic stage, Mario proceeds to later levels in the game for a showdown with Bowser. Although the path is fixed and no failure screens ever appear, the video still showcases impressive interactive creativity, completely breaking free from the traditional video format framework.
Since this Super Mario 64 YouTube video only covers a small portion of the game, and technically the player isn’t really controlling Mario through the levels, there are still several other ways for players who want to experience the full game firsthand. Besides playing the original Super Mario 64 cartridge on the Nintendo 64 console, players can also revisit this classic 3D platformer through the Nintendo Switch Online “Nintendo 64” app on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2.

Players have spent years trying to play Super Mario 64 in all sorts of unconventional ways, and this unique VR version offers another refreshing way to experience it. As for which other classic retro games will be turned into immersive YouTube videos in the future, that remains to be seen.
