Intel’s flagship APU breaks convention: Razor Lake-AX may simply reuse the old cores from Nova Lake.

Intel’s next-generation mobile gaming APU architecture plans have taken a major turn. According to information shared by leaker Jaykihn on platform X, the flagship APU codenamed Razor Lake-AX will not use the previously expected new Griffin Cove and Golden Eagle core architectures, but will instead directly adopt the Coyote Cove (P-core) and Arctic Wolf (E-core) combination from the Nova Lake desktop processor. This news breaks expectations regarding Intel’s product line iteration.

Intel Flagship APU Breaks Convention: Razor Lake-AX May Directly Reuse Nova Lake’s Older Cores

Following naming conventions, Razor Lake, as the next generation after Nova Lake, should logically feature a newer CPU core architecture. However, Intel’s decision to directly reuse Nova Lake’s core design in Razor Lake-AX reflects strategic product considerations. By transplanting Nova Lake’s cores unchanged into Razor Lake-AX, Intel has broken external expectations for product line iteration. When asked which cores Razor Lake-AX actually uses, JaykihnBrief replyThe letters “CYC ARW,” which stand for Coyote Cove and Arctic Wolf, confirmed this specification.

Product positioning: not a traditional CPU, but a rival to AMD Halo.

Razor Lake-AX’s design philosophy differs from that of traditional processors. It is positioned as a direct competitor to AMD Strix Halo, Gorgon Halo, and Medusa Halo, with the core concept being the integration of AMD Halo’s large-core solution.Similar to Intel’s own Lunar Lake packaging philosophy.integrating LPDDR memory within the package, keeping the CPU portion relatively streamlined, and focusing on the integrated graphics chip and overall packaging density.

From this angle, whether the CPU cores use a new or old architecture really isn’t the most critical variable for the Razor Lake-AX. This APU is essentially an entry-level discrete GPU with a built-in CPU that’s good enough for the job—the product’s focus is on the scale of the integrated graphics and the capacity of the packaged memory, not the CPU’s compute performance. Since the product’s core value lies in the integrated graphics and packaged memory, keeping the proven, mature architecture for the CPU cores actually helps reduce development risk and shorten time to market.

32-core integrated graphics: surpassing the scale of the discrete Arc B580

The core selling points of Razor Lake-AX come down to two specs: 32GB of on-package memory and an integrated GPU with 32 Xe cores. A 32-Xe-core setup is quite staggering. For context, Panther Lake currently tops out at 12 Xe3 cores, the discrete Arc B580 only has 20 Xe cores, and you’d need to go up to the workstation-class Arc Pro B70 to get 32 Xe cores. In other words, the integrated GPU on Razor Lake-AX has already caught up with—or even surpassed—the level of some discrete graphics cards.

In terms of architecture, Razor Lake-AX is expected to feature an integrated GPU based on the Xe3P architecture, and there are also reports that it may directly use the latest Xe4 Druid architecture. Previously leaked information shows that Intel planned two SKU configurations: 16-core and 32-core, both smaller than the 48-core version previously planned for the canceled Nova Lake-AX.

If the Xe4 Druid architecture is ultimately adopted, this will mark the debut of Intel’s latest-generation graphics architecture on mobile platforms. Intel has already cancelled the Xe3P “Celestial” gaming GPU lineup for discrete graphics cards, and the discrete version of Xe4 Druid is also shrouded in uncertainty. However, the integrated graphics in Razor Lake-AX may instead become the primary stage for Intel to showcase the capabilities of its new architecture. For gamers, integrated graphics reaching discrete-level performance means thin-and-light laptops could also handle certain gaming demands—a goal that was previously out of reach for integrated graphics.

The launch timeline and brand naming remain unknown.

Intel has not yet officially revealed any details about Razor Lake-AX. Nova Lake processors are expected to fall under the Core Ultra 400 series, but whether Razor Lake-AX will belong to the Core 400 or 500 series remains unanswered. Some analysts suggest Intel may adopt a naming approach similar to that used for handheld console chips, but this is purely speculative at this point.

Regarding the launch timeline, Intel’s Nova Lake is expected to debut in early 2027, while Razor Lake may arrive around 2028. However, since Razor Lake-AX heavily reuses the design of the cancelled Nova Lake-AX, it could potentially be moved up to late 2027.

The emergence of Razor Lake-AX signals that Intel is trying a different product approach. As AMD continues to push forward with its Halo series APUs, Intel has chosen to counter with large-scale integrated graphics paired with packaged memory, while using mature architectures on the CPU side to reduce development risk. AMD’s Halo series emphasizes integrating high-performance CPUs with large-scale integrated graphics on a single package, with the goal of giving laptops and compact desktops sufficient graphics performance without requiring a discrete GPU. Intel’s Razor Lake-AX is clearly targeting this market segment—the combination of 32 Xe cores and 32GB of packaged memory already demonstrates solid competitiveness on paper. Whether this APU can go head-to-head with AMD’s Halo in real-world performance won’t be known until the product is officially released.
