Google cancels the AI Studio mobile app, but the web version will continue to exist.

Google originally planned to launch a standalone AI Studio mobile app, allowing developers and AI enthusiasts to build prompts and test models directly on Android and iPhone, using their phones as the primary tool for creation and experimentation. However, those plans have now taken a major turn. Google confirmed in a post on the official AI Studio account that the mobile app will be canceled before its official release, despite nearly 800,000 users having completed pre-registration on iOS and Android.

Google discontinues AI Studio mobile app, but web version will remain

Google stated that they no longer want to ask users to install another Google app, and have instead chosen to adopt a more integrated strategy. The company is currently working with the Gemini team to bring AI Studio’s various creation tools directly into the Gemini platform, allowing development workflows to naturally blend into everyday conversations and work contexts. In other words, Google wants users to be able to handle prompt design, prototyping, and model testing on the fly while interacting with Gemini on their phones or computers, without needing to switch between different apps.

thank you to the ~800,000 of you that pre-ordered our mobile app on iOS and Android — it’s clear that people are interested in building software on the go

instead of asking you to download yet another app we’ve decided to take an entirely different approach: one where apps…

This kind of strategic adjustment is not entirely without precedent. Over the past year, Google has continuously expanded Gemini’s capabilities, evolving it from a simple chatbot into a versatile assistant that can help with research, code writing, image generation, and handling complex tasks. Integrating AI Studio’s tools into Gemini rather than maintaining two separate products does lower the learning curve for users and allows more people to naturally encounter these development features.

As for developers who are already using AI Studio in their browsers, Google emphasized there’s no need to worry. The company has committed to continued investment in the web version of AI Studio, positioning it as a core platform for turning ideas into prompts, prototypes, and even commercial products. In other words, Google is currently rethinking the “mobile presentation” rather than the product’s overall value; desktop and web experiences remain their priority.

When will the integrated version of Gemini begin offering AI Studio features? Google has not yet announced a specific timeline, only stating that both teams are actively developing and more details will be revealed in the future. What is certain is that Google wants Gemini to become the primary entry point for AI development, rather than launching another standalone mobile app. This not only reflects Google’s long-term positioning for Gemini, but also shows that they are trying to build a more unified and easier-to-use AI ecosystem.
