in Anti-Virus Software and Internet Security

Adware may not sound as threatening as viruses or ransomware, but it can be annoying and disruptive to your experience. But what exactly is this adware? How did it appear on your device? More importantly, how do you get rid of it?

What is adware (Adware) and how to avoid it?

Adware is a type of malicious software that downloads and displays intrusive and unwanted advertisements on your device. These ads may appear as pop-ups, banners, or in-app ads that disrupt your browsing or app experience. While some adware may be purely annoying, others may have additional malicious intent. Clicking on these ads typically generates revenue for developers, but can also track your online activities, collect personal data, or redirect you to unsafe websites.

How does advertising software spread?

Adware does not appear on your device for no reason. Many times, users willingly open the door for adware to enter their devices by downloading free apps and carefully reading the privacy policy, terms and conditions, and often unknowingly agree to and install adware.

Visiting unhealthy or malicious websites may expose you to adware. These sites may prompt you to download files or click on misleading ads that install adware in the background. You may also have adware installed by downloading apps from unsafe third-party app stores. In addition, adware can also be spread through phishing emails or messages, tricking users into clicking on links or downloading attachments that secretly install adware.

Determine if there is adware on the device

Adware can be very sneaky, but there are many signs that it can find its way onto a device.

  • Lots of ads appearing in unusual places
The most noticeable ones are pop-up ads. If you see an unusually large number of intrusive ads that are difficult to close, it means there is likely some adware on your device.

  • Device suddenly slows down and consumes power
Adware consumes resources on your device in order to display ads or run in the background. If your device suddenly becomes slow or takes longer to open an app, or if your battery is draining faster than usual.

  • Data usage surges
Because adware continues to run in the background, it can occupy the network connection to communicate with remote servers or download more malicious files. If your data usage spikes for no apparent reason, you may have adware installed on your device.

  • Getting strange notifications from unknown apps or websites
Some adware can take over the device’s notification system to push spam ads or notifications. If you receive a message from an app or website, it’s likely that adware is running.

  • Seeing an app on your device that you don’t remember downloading
Certain types of malware or adware may download applications to your device without your permission, but you may not remember that you have actively downloaded them. Please be especially careful in this case.

Get rid of adware

If you suspect that your device is infected with adware, don’t be unduly alarmed. Removing it is usually simple if you act quickly. First, check the applications installed on your device and delete them. If you want to confirm whether the problem comes from a third-party application, you can switch your phone to safe mode. In safe mode, all third-party applications on your phone will be grayed out and you can only use default applications. When your phone is in safe mode and does not encounter unwanted ads, the adware comes from apps you have installed.

Antivirus or scanning software can detect and remove adware from your device. Please use them to perform a complete scan of your device and follow the recommendations to isolate or remove the detected adware. Adware often targets web browsers by changing settings and adding unwanted extensions. To remove these changes, restore the browser to its default values.

After all your efforts, if the adware is still present, you may need to restore the device to its original settings. This will clear the contents of the device and return it to its original state. Before performing this operation, be sure to back up your data in advance to avoid losing important photos and data.
