Earlier, after Google released Gemini 3, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had already issued a “code red” to the company, requiring all resources to be refocused on improving the quality of ChatGPT and putting other unannounced projects on hold. At that point, it was already possible to speculate that OpenAI’s new model would arrive ahead of schedule—OpenAI couldn’t possibly let Google stay ahead for that long.
According to an internal memo from Monday obtained by The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI revealed a series of plans, including a new reasoning model expected to launch next week. In the memo, Altman claimed the new model’s performance will surpass Google’s latest Gemini 3, though he did not disclose its name.
Earlier, there were market rumors that a new language model codenamed “Shallotpeat” was in development, though it’s uncertain whether this is the one. At the time, the consensus on this new model was that it could grow well even on “difficult training terrain,” and that OpenAI wanted to thoroughly fix flaws in its pre-training foundation and data.
Besides the new model, the memo also mentioned that in the future ChatGPT will provide faster and more stable responses, presumably at the same speed as Gemini’s quick mode. Additionally, there will be a more personalized experience and a chatbot that can answer a wider range of questions.
Nick Turley, who leads ChatGPT, also mentioned in a Monday X post that one of the company’s key focuses is making the chatbot “feel more intuitive and personalized.”
OpenAI is also expected to delay other initiatives, such as AI agents for health and shopping, as well as the personal assistant Pulse. These features were only unveiled a few months ago. Advertising-related plans are also unlikely to launch anytime soon.
