With more and more PCIe 5.0 SSD products on the market, some players who want to build a flagship gaming computer and conquer the top at once will definitely consider whether to buy PCIe 5.0. However, the current prices are very expensive and the budget requires more. Therefore, if you are not the kind of player with an unlimited budget and want to reserve more funds for other hardware, at this stage, choosing PCIe 4.0 is enough, because when it comes to playing games, the difference is not very big.

Gamers, don’t waste money on PCIe 5.0 SSD, PCIe 4.0 is enough
Although there are many PCIe 5.0 SSD products on the market, the price of 1TB is at least 5,000 yuan, while PCIe 4.0 1TB can be purchased for the cheapest 1,xxx yuan. The price difference is more than 5~6 times, which can be said to be very different:

Of course, the transmission speed of PCIe 5.0 is much faster than that of PCIe 4.0, both in writing and reading. In addition, it is still a newly launched product, so it is reasonable to be so expensive. However, this extremely fast transmission speed does not add too many points to the game.
Regarding this point, we can refer to the test report of the foreign media The Verge. They tested three products: Crucial T700 2TB PCIe Gen5 NVMe M.2 SSD, Seagate FireCuda 540 2TB M.2 2280 PCIe 5.0, and Samsung 980 Pro 1TB PCIe 4.0.
They used CrystalDiskMark to test the writing and reading of Crucial and Seagate, and they said they were twice as fast as Samsung. Just looking at this, some people will say that they should buy a PCIe 5.0 SSD. This is wrong because the speed that affects the loading of games is the random read/write speed, so Samsung is only a little behind.

Seagate FireCuda 540 results:

Samsung 980 Pro results:

Then moving on to the actual game test, there are five games in total. The following is the loading speed of each game.
“Tomb Raider: Shadow”
- Crucial T700:8.55 seconds
- Seagate FireCuda 540:8.3 seconds
- Samsung 980 Pro:8.25 seconds
《Cyberpunk 2077》
- Crucial T700:34.89 seconds
- Seagate FireCuda 540:33.94 seconds
- Samsung 980 Pro:35 seconds
“Gears of War 5”
- Crucial T700:52.9 seconds
- Seagate FireCuda 540:52.67 seconds
- Samsung 980 Pro:56.89 seconds
“Return of Death”
- Crucial T700:25.5 seconds
- Seagate FireCuda 540:25.06 seconds
- Samsung 980 Pro:25.18 seconds
《CS:GO》
- Crucial T700:35.02 seconds
- Seagate FireCuda 540:35.24 seconds
- Samsung 980 Pro:35.46 seconds
It can be seen that the PCIe 4.0 Samsung 980 Pro is not far behind Taiwan. Except for “Gears of War 5”, the gap is within 1~2 seconds. “Gears of War 5” is indeed about 4 seconds faster, but it is not worth spending more than 5 times more money for this 4 seconds.
In addition, PCIe Gen 6 is currently rumored to be launched within 2 years at the earliest, so at this stage, the CP value of PCIe 4.0 is definitely much higher.
