We’ve already seen a lot of touted Wi-Fi 7 routers in the 2023 market, and there will be even more in 2024. However, you can’t actually use Wi-Fi 7 on the first routers to come out because the standard has been slow to be finalized and almost no devices support it. Now, Wi-Fi 7 is finally officially here, and all of these routers may be getting retroactive certification.

Wi-Fi 7 has officially arrived, aggregating capabilities across multiple frequency bands to increase network connection speeds

The Wi-Fi Alliance (the organization responsible for overseeing Wi-Fi) finally officially launched the Wi-Fi 7 standard during CES 2024, which includes a series of new features and improvements designed to enhance your wireless performance and connectivity. The Wi-Fi Alliance said that the development of Wi-Fi 7 is the result of extensive collaboration and innovation among all companies in the group, and it is expected that more than 233 million devices will adopt Wi-Fi 7 by 2024, and by 2028, the number of devices will significantly increase to 2.1 billion devices between smartphones, PCs, tablets, APs, client equipment (CPE) and AR.

Notable advancements in Wi-Fi 7 include the introduction of the 320MHz band, doubling the widest spectrum in countries where the 6GHz band is currently available. Multi-mode technology (MLO) enables devices to transmit and receive data simultaneously across multiple frequency bands, increasing throughput, reducing latency and enhancing reliability. Other features include 4096 QAM transfer rates that are 20% higher than 1024 QAM, 512 compressed block acknowledgments for greater efficiency, and multi-RU to a single STA for enhanced spectral efficiency.

Companies like Asus, TP-Link, Netgear, and others have launched a plethora of Wi-Fi 7 routers. To take advantage of Wi-Fi 7, both the router and the devices using it must support the new standard, and if you want to enjoy the many benefits of Wi-Fi 7, you’ll still need to buy a new router unless you actually purchased a new router within the past year and are specifically looking for a model that supports Wi-Fi 7. Likewise, while Wi-Fi 7-enabled devices are starting to appear on store shelves, it may be a while before anyone can use it, but it’s great to see how powerful wireless networks are becoming.
