Many Android users talk about it, thinking that compared to the iPhone users next door, they have a higher degree of freedom in sideloading and even rooting applications. Even if it gives a considerable degree of freedom, Google does not completely let go of applications from unknown sources that have malicious intentions of invading the system. Recently, they announced that they will add an “enhanced version” of the malicious application protection mechanism on top of the existing foundation.

Through the enhanced version of Google Play Protect, in addition to its own comparison data, it will also provide a real-time scanning mechanism for new Android applications. The thoroughness of the scanning will reach the “code-level” to face unknown threats. It is hoped that the mobile phone can be more completely protected from being damaged by malicious apps or even leaking precious files and private information.

Previously, Google Play Protect would detect when an app was installed and compare it to a database of existing malware to identify potentially malicious apps. If a harmful app is detected, in addition to actively stopping the app, a notification will also be sent to prompt the user to uninstall the app themselves. In most cases, the app may even be automatically removed as long as a harmful app is detected – that is, a removed notification will be received.
The enhanced version of the detection mechanism will scan at the code-level and return this information to the Play Protect backend for analysis to respond to new threats that have not been included in the malicious application database, or that use AI and other methods to evade the original scanning mechanism. According to Google, their detection algorithm involves the results of machine learning for each application, allowing Google Play Protect to gradually improve its identification capabilities. This feature will be available starting in India and will be expanded to all Android devices running Google Play Services in the future.
