Google says people learn best when actively engaging with information, so through close collaboration with educators, students, and teaching experts, they developed LearnLM, a series of models fine-tuned specifically for learning and grounded in educational research, now integrated into Gemini today as: “Guided Learning.”
“Guided learning” uses exploratory and open-ended questions to encourage user engagement and stimulate discussion, helping build deep understanding rather than just getting answers. Like ChatGPT, Gemini also breaks down problems step by step and adjusts its explanations based on your responses. Even better, Gemini doesn’t just provide text—it also supports multimodal responses, including images, charts, and videos. When I tested it, it could actually generate explanatory images.
Usage is simple: after opening the Gemini chat interface, at the bottom right of the input box, you’ll see the “Guided Learning” mode. Click it and it turns blue, which means it’s enabled:
Then you can tell Gemini what you want to learn. Initially, Gemini will break down the learning content and divide it into multiple parts so you can choose the aspect you want to understand. For example, when I asked about learning how to use AI chatbots, Gemini let me choose between basic skills, application aspects, or advanced techniques:
If guided learning mode isn’t enabled, Gemini would directly give the answer to the same question.
When I select advanced tips, Gemini responds in a bulleted list format, and at the end lets me choose the tips I’m interested in, then explains that specific tip:
If needed, you can also ask Gemini to explain this content using images, charts, or even videos. Generating images fits well with the “role assignment” technique I’m currently learning:
As for the video part, I didn’t test video generation—I actually searched for related videos online. I even thought tutorial videos could be generated (laughs).
If you want to learn through videos or Podcasts, you can first get all the content you want to learn in Gemini, then throw it all into NotebookLM to generate a Podcast or video summary from it. However, NotebookLM Video SummaryThe feature currently doesn’t support Chinese and can only generate English videos.
So, from now on, whenever there’s something you want to learn, be sure to enable guided learning mode. Compared to regular mode, you’ll get more in-depth content and easily find the topics you most want to learn.
Google didn’t say whether the mode has usage limits, and it looks like it doesn’t. Both Gemini 2.5 Flash and Gemini 2.5 Pro can use it.
