A new feature in the iOS version of the Google app offers a simpler way to understand complex technical terms.
When reading advanced or cross-disciplinary documents, you’ll often find yourself confused by various specialized terms—just understanding a single term can be a bottleneck that holds back your continued reading. According to Android Police According to the report, Google is working to make interpretation tasks easier for you and accelerate your work efficiency.
Google is unlocking the aforementioned similar feature on iOS, but it’s not just a simple summary—it aims to help users simplify complex documents and technical jargon. The feature is now live with the English name “Simplify,” which means exactly what it sounds like, and it’s currently only accessible through the Google app on iOS. Google explains that it uses Gemini to break down difficult concepts in an easy-to-understand way, essentially turning dense, hard-to-follow language into plain, accessible wording.
Google doesn’t specifically mention it, but when you select a paragraph of text in the Google app on iOS, the simplification tool may show up in the pop-up More Actions section, as shown in the screenshot below.
To support the Simplify feature, Google is using A method named “Prompt Refinement” developed by Google ResearchA new method that runs text through Gemini to prevent the loss of key details, accuracy, and nuances that may be critical to understanding complex topics. Google conducted a study with 4,563 participants to test Simplify on various complex topics, including medical research, biology, law, finance, literature, philosophy, aerospace, and computer science, among others.
Research found that Simplify significantly improved participants’ understanding of complex information. As shown in the figure below, simplification enhances clarity by defining technical terms (such as pulmonary emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis), breaking down dense sentences, and clarifying complex relationships, which can significantly improve text comprehension accuracy by 38%.
Whether the Simplify feature will eventually make its way to the Google app on Android remains to be seen, but if testing goes well, the chances are quite high.
