I don’t know if it’s because of inflation, which has caused the cost to rise too much, or for other reasons, but the newly launched graphics cards from NVIDIA seem to be priced too high, except RTX 4080 In addition, the same goes for RTX 3060 8GB. This one was released by NVIDIA at the end of October. It was finally launched recently. Foreign YouTubers also quickly started to test it. Unsurprisingly, the performance is slower than 12GB, and the gap is quite big. More importantly, at this stage, the price of RTX 3060 8GB is higher than that of 12GB. Similarly, this also means that if some players are not careful, they may end up spending the same money but buying a model with lower performance.

NVIDIA RTX 3060 8GB new graphics card has been tested and is 17% slower than 12GB, but now the price is the same

Earlier, the Hardware Unboxed channel, which has millions of subscribers, uploaded a video of actual performance testing of the NVIDIA GeFoce RTX 3060 8GB. The title was “Same name, same price, worse performance.” This shows that the evaluation of this RTX 3060 8GB is not very good.

Regarding the specifications of RTX 3060 8GB, some people may not be clear about it. In addition to the memory being reduced from 12GB to 8GB, the memory interface bandwidth has also been changed from 192 bits to 128 bits. Everything else is the same, such as being based on GA106, with 3584 CUDA cores and 170W TDP, etc., which was published at the time NVIDIA has not provided a suggested selling price, so we will only know how much it will sell for when it goes on sale.

Currently, RTX 3060 8GB seems to be sold at the same price as 12GB in the United States, and the same is true in Taiwan. I checked the RTX 3060 8GB and RTX 3060 12GB launched by the same brand, and they are both NT$10,990. In Australia, the 12GB is about AU$100 cheaper, so no matter how you look at it, it is more cost-effective to buy 12GB, especially after seeing the actual performance test.

Hardware Unboxed tests 12 games at both 1080p and 1440p quality settings and calculates average FPS. The first is 1080p. The RTX 3060 8GB has an average of 94 FPS, and the RTX 3060 12GB has an average of 110 FPS. The gap is quite big. The performance of the 8GB version is about the same as the Intel Arc 750, but it is lower than the Intel A770:

It can also be seen that RTX 3060 8GB does make up for the middle position between RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 12GB, but if the price is as it is now, no one will choose this card, and it should be between these two cards.

The 1440P image quality is similar. The RTX 3060 8GB has an average of 67 FPS, and the RTX 3060 12GB has an average of 79 FPS. The Intel Arc A750 performs better at this image quality, almost the same as the 12GB version:

Overall, NVIDIA’s current pricing strategy is really problematic. It is still based on the previous frenzied rush for graphics cards, and has not taken into account the current decline of the RTX 30 series. What makes people more worried is, will NVIDIA use this pricing strategy in the future? Regardless of whether the current sales are good or not, this problem will disappear after the RTX 30 series, which has dropped in price, sells for the same amount.

Hardware Unboxed also mentioned that from another perspective, this further proves that the CP value of the RTX 3060 12GB after the price reduction is very high, and it is really worth considering for those who need a graphics card.
