Since Microsoft’s Copilot was introduced, it has essentially been present in all of their products and software, including your Windows operating system, browser, Microsoft 365 suite, and everything else. Now, Microsoft has announced it’s adding Copilot to Xbox, which doesn’t come as a surprise at all.

Microsoft announces ‘Copilot for Gaming’, launching first on Xbox.
Microsoft announces it will launch “Copilot for Gaming”This new version of Copilot is mainly there to help you in games. According to Xbox’s VP of Gaming AI, Fatima Kardar, gaming is the only form of entertainment that can leave you stuck, and Copilot can help you push through those tough spots.

So, how exactly does Copilot work on Xbox? It acts as a kind of “companion” in everything it does. Copilot provides suggestions and guidance to help players improve their performance in games. If you’re stuck somewhere in a game, or can’t get past the final boss or a puzzle, Copilot will try to help you find a solution and tell you what you need to do to overcome it.

Over the past few decades, when you hit an obstacle in a game, you’d turn to paper or online strategy guides for tips, but you had to put the game down and spend some time researching. Copilot can simplify that process by quickly pulling together step-by-step ways to clear the game from gaming content, which may come from walkthroughs written on community sites, online guides, or other forum posts, giving players information on specific parts. The AI model itself may know some very basic things, such as Minecraft crafting recipes, but it can struggle with new games released after the model’s knowledge cutoff, so at certain points, it has to search Bing for more information.
The prototype shown by Microsoft may or may not resemble the final product. Often, guide writers receive contributions from ordinary people, and their work is largely unpaid and voluntary in nature; apart from community recognition, there is no benefit to writing these articles. Copilot tends to be very good at listing sources when citing articles, because it was initially launched as an AI component of the Bing search engine.

This isn’t the only thing the AI does. Copilot will also recommend games based on individual player preferences, and it will also help streamline the process of finding, downloading, and updating games. Gamers can decide how and when to interact with Copilot, ensuring that the AI enhances rather than disrupts the gaming experience. It may still take some time before we see the final version on Xbox consoles or PC. Microsoft says that for now, it is just beginning testing with a mobile preview for Xbox Insiders, but we may see more implementations in the future.
