Polish radio station introduces AI radio host, sparking controversy—listeners unhappy, real journalists out of work?
Poland’s Kraków radio station OFF Radio Kraków has announced a three-month innovative experiment starting 10/22, using AI artificial intelligence as radio hosts. The Kraków station will feature three virtual hosts—Emilia, Jakub, and Alex—to cover topics ranging from music, culture, and technology to ecology.

Radio Kraków calls its three virtual hosts, Emilia, Jakub, and Alex, representatives of Generation Z, targeting young Poles aged 20–26. Through Emilia, Jakub, and Alex, it hopes to understand whether AI is an opportunity or a threat to media, broadcasting, and journalism.
The three hosts each have their own backstories: Emilia is a 20-year-old journalism student, Jakub is a 22-year-old acoustical engineering major, and Alex is a 23-year-old psychology student. Although Emilia, Jakub, and Alex are AI-generated, the content they report is prepared by real journalists using AI tools. After the report documents are generated, they are checked and verified by human journalists before being converted into audio. So while Radio Kraków uses AI anchors, the broadcast content is still prepared by real journalists.
Using AI has met with backlash.
Journalist and film critic Mateusz Demski, who previously hosted a program for Kraków Radio, on TuesdayPublish an open letterProtesting Kraków radio station’s use of AI to replace employees. Mateusz said he joined the station in February 2022, and in August this year he was fired along with about a dozen or so journalists. Two months later, Kraków radio launched an experiment using AI as radio hosts. He believes the station is using AI to replace real people.
Mateusz says the radio station’s use of AI could replace veteran employees with years of media experience and workers in the creative industry. Mateusz also stated that over 15,000 people have already signed his petition, and he has even received hundreds of calls from young people who say they don’t want to be subjects of the Kraków radio station’s experiment.
In response, the editor-in-chief of Radio Kraków, Marcin Pulit, said that the firing of journalists in August was not due to AI, but because the station’s listenership was nearly zero. Meanwhile, the AI radio host project at Radio Kraków will only last three months, after which a new generation of young reporters will take over the hosting duties.
