Popular 1080P monitorStill widely available, it offers many features that gamers will love, such as extremely high refresh rates, allowing it to compete with higher-resolution panels. 4K screens may look amazing, but they’re usually more expensive. This makes people think, since 4K games are so popular, is it still necessary to buy a 1080P monitor?

Now that 4K gaming is taking over, is it still worth buying a 1080P monitor?

While gamers can benefit from higher resolutions, there are plenty of reasons why 1080P is still a good choice for most gamers. 1080P aka FHD is not a thing of the past due to the ubiquity of 4K, in fact most media produced by major film or television studios still has 1080P as the most common resolution. For players who play the latest AAA games at entry-level or below mid-level, 1080P also has the most reliable rendering and resolution.

According to April 2025 Latest data from Steam Hardware Survey, most gaming computers have NVIDIA GeForce RTX 60 or lower graphics cards. The GTX 1060 and variants of the RTX 2060, 3060 and 4060 occupy 8 of the top 12 spots in the survey, with 2 of the remaining 4 being taken by lower-end cards. What all these cards have in common is that they produce the most frames per second when playing newer games at 1080P resolution, higher graphics settings.

Generally speaking, frame rate is far more important than resolution, and 1080P is the best choice for most gamers looking to get the best performance from an entry-level graphics card. A 1080P monitor with a high refresh rate will perform much better than a 1440p or 4K monitor with a low refresh rate. You should also prioritize good connectivity and display panel technology over resolution. Beautiful 1080P images with accurate colors, good contrast, low latency and high frame rates will always be better than high-resolution images that don’t look like much. By the same token, a 1080P OLED display may look better than a 4K LCD display in many cases due to OLED’s typically superior contrast and color. You should compare spec sheets and look for credible reviews of any monitor you’re ultimately considering, and compare it to other options in your price range.

The average gamer may not need a high-resolution monitor, but if you have a high-end gaming PC with a more advanced GPU, such as an NVIDIA 70 or higher, and a powerful processor, such as an AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D or similar, you’ll be better off with a monitor that supports 1440P or higher resolutions. You can look up graphics card reviews to see what resolutions professional hardware testers recommend, but as a general rule, past generations of RTX 70 cards are considered the best for 1440P, while the highest-end cards like the 4090 and 5090 are considered best for full 4K gaming.

Even if your GPU’s optimal resolution is 1080P, it’s worth investing in a 1440P monitor, as some games, especially those from a few years ago, will still perform well at 1440P on these cards. Additionally, if your computer is also your TV, then opting for a 4K monitor may be a smarter choice, as you’ll have the option to watch movies, TV shows, and YouTube at native resolution. Those who anticipate using a monitor to play games on the latest generation of consoles should also opt for 4K if possible. Models like the updated PlayStation 5 Pro and the latest Xbox Series
