This feature is called “Enhanced Visual Search” in the Photos app. According to the official description, when this feature is enabled, the system will “allow the device to privately compare the locations in your photos to a global index maintained by Apple, allowing you to search for almost any landmark or point of interest.”
In response to privacy concerns, Apple also stated on its official website that it will use three mechanisms to ensure that neither Apple nor even hackers can learn the information in the photos. Its description is as follows:
「Enhanced Visual Search in Photos allows you to search for photos using landmarks or points of interest. Your device privately matches places in your photos to a global index Apple maintains on our servers. We apply homomorphic encryption and differential privacy, and use an OHTTP relay that hides IP address. Personally, I think that even though the benefits this feature can bring currently don’t seem obvious. But with the advancement of Apple Intelligence, officials seem to be preparing more interesting features by analyzing the characteristics of users’ photos.
