Perplexity was found to have enabled Android default assistant support: it can use the phone screen and camera for real-time queries, and supports smart assistant features.

It looks like the battle of “generative digital assistants” in the generative AI era is already on the verge of breaking out. Following the release of the latest task feature in the OpenAI ChatGPT App, which is aiming to be the most powerful digital assistant (see more:Generative AI promoted to the ultimate digital assistant? ChatGPT introduces the latest “Tasks” scheduling reminder feature.)。

Perplexity, which only recently launched its dedicated app, has been discovered remarkably quickly to have already quietly added, in its yet-to-be-officially-released v2.37.0 app, the latest support that can directly replace Google’s voice assistant as the default digital assistant.

That’s right. Although Google has been noted for seemingly conceding third-party assistant customization for Android’s default voice assistant service, it still hasn’t opened up access to voice keywords (such as “Hey Google”), which makes competition in this area feel somewhat unfair. Clearly, though, this hasn’t stopped third-party services from actively working on better voice assistants—the Perplexity app discovered this time is one example.

The key point is that the Android version of the Perplexity app is not limited to simple chat or basic system task functions like reminders. Foreign media, which sideloaded the latest v2.37.0 APK, noted this.

Allows users to choose from different models such as Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Sonar Large, Sonar Huge, GPT-4o, Grok-2, Claude 3.5 Haiku, and O1. Even the Perplexity app with image generation models like Playground v3, DALL-E 3, and Flux.1.

After adding support for the Default digital assistant app, it further introduced the On-Screen Context feature, which lets you summarize directly on the phone screen or ask the bot to help analyze and explain; it also includes the Live View recognition feature that lets you open the camera for real-time recognition.

Simply put, from standard text responses to visual search analysis features, everything will be woven into the Android digital assistant experience through the Perplexity app.

As shown in the app’s description, while voice wake-up is not supported, Perplexity can be quickly launched via the power button and system gestures/virtual system buttons when set as the default voice assistant.

Although at this stage Perplexity has not yet officially announced such support. However, based on the current information, they are indeed quite actively developing integration features for the Android system. Perhaps Google, and even Apple and OpenAI, should pay close attention to the development of this rising star.
