Is generative AI becoming the ultimate digital assistant? ChatGPT brings the latest “Tasks” scheduling, reminder, and memo features
Currently, OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot has around 300 million active users, according to reported surveys. However, as Apple and Google, both of which have spent years cultivating software and hardware ecosystems, increasingly integrate generative AI into their own experiences, OpenAI’s advantage is gradually being diluted by more integrated AI offerings.
However, OpenAI has no intention of sitting idly by either. It has been positioning itself early, attempting to carve out a path deeper into mobile and even desktop systems through its dedicated ChatGPT app. Now, ChatGPT appears ready to demonstrate its resolve to challenge Google Assistant and Siri as voice assistants, starting with more thoughtful scheduling and reminder features.
Reportedly, OpenAI will begin rolling out beta testing for its latest “Tasks” feature to global ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro paid subscribers starting this week.
Simply put, this feature is quite similar to the memo function found in most voice assistants. You can simply say “Remind me when my passport expires in six months” and ChatGPT will proactively create a reminder for you. In the app, there is a dedicated scheduling page called “Scheduled” where you can manage these reminders and memo tasks. This lets you manage more detailed items such as the schedule’s recurrence, title, and the function you want ChatGPT to perform – and of course, you can also pause or even delete scheduled tasks.
Since this uses ChatGPT’s service, it naturally has the potential for deeper applications than typical voice assistants. Foreign media cited examples like “provide a weekend plan every Friday based on my location and weather forecast” or “give me a news summary every morning at 7 a.m.” — advanced task items like these can also be accomplished through the new Tasks feature.
Admittedly, although this feature may seem like just a small tool that executes Prompt commands on a schedule – after all, if you really need to repeat something, you can simply copy and paste the command, or even rerun it through your past chat sessions. Still, it does help keep daily recurring tasks more organized and eliminates the worry of forgetting to do them.
Those who want to use it can check the ChatGPT app’s dropdown menu to see if there’s a new “4o with scheduled tasks” option. According to TechCrunch, the current beta version doesn’t yet support advanced voice features.
Even though right now this looks like a feature that triggers ChatGPT to execute tasks on a fixed schedule, some people hope that in the future it could provide reminders through mechanisms like “notify me when concert tickets go on sale” – though that feels a bit too advanced?
However, OpenAI has also indicated that they will consider future features based on how people use Tasks. So it seems like there’s still something to look forward to — the opportunity for “generative assistants” that are more proactive and smarter than traditional smart assistants to become essential everyday tools through apps? I wonder if everyone is looking forward to this evolution?
