Lightweight NotebookLM? Gemini Live AI’s support for uploading YouTube or files to start conversations has been uncovered.
It seems that Google NotebookLM, which helps users quickly grasp large volumes of documents or research content, previously launched a “Deep Dive Conversation” feature that uses two AIs to converse via voice, helping users more easily understand and digest information. That may have just been a precursor push strategy – there are now signs that similar features are being prepared to roll out more broadly across additional applications.
Recently, foreign media discovered that among Gemini’s features, it’s been uncovered that Google is testing a feature that lets you upload files and directly prompts you to chat with the AI about the content via voice. It also supports continuing conversations. Honestly, this feature gives me the impression of a lightweight version of NotebookLM. So I’m especially looking forward to its official release.

Foreign media Android Police cited app expert @AssembleDebug’s discovery of hidden features in Google app v16.1.38. It was found that when you use Gemini’s file upload feature (currently limited to Gemini Advanced paid subscribers), a “Talk Live about this” capsule button will appear in the new experience.
Once you click, you’ll be redirected to the Gemini Live conversation interface – it shows a brief processing screen, and then, after some fun sound effects, it asks the user by voice what they’d like to know.

In foreign media testing, this feature—which uses Gemini Live to analyze files (and reportedly can also take YouTube links directly)—supports not only text files like PDFs. They also fed screenshots of the Gemini interface into it, and Gemini Live was able to analyze, one by one, what functions the images might be processing.
As for text files, the Gemini Live voice feature “Talk Live about this” analyzes the vehicle’s warranty document and then organizes relevant information for users on questions like how to obtain warranty coverage.

Overall, although this feature currently requires a paid Gemini Advanced subscription to enable, unlike the free NotebookLM (that’s how it stands for now, and it’s even a hidden feature), it’s still more convenient on the whole. And compared to the “Deep Dive conversation” feature, Gemini Live offers better interactivity—though you can still ask questions through Google NotebookLM’s chat interface.
